Pattern 1 vs Pattern 2

Using the stock coin program without any changes, does the detector lose any depth detection when toggling from pattern 2 to pattern 1? It is certainly quieter when going through trash when it is set on pattern 1 but I do not want to lose any detection depth. Thanks for your comments.

You will actually get more depth in pattern #2 IF you are using a more open screen than on pattern #1. I normally use a "almost" open screen in pattern #2 that I can switch to if I have a questionable target in pattern #1. If it is iron then you will definitely hear it in the open pattern #2 and can move on to a better target.

What about sound? Is sound independent of pattern 1 and 2? Lets say the coin is 8" deep and you can see it on the screen in pattern 2. It is not visible on the screen in pattern 1 because of the discrimination and loss of depth between patterns. Will you still hear the coin the same on both patterns even though you do not see it on pattern 1? Remember everything is stock coin program without changes.

Not to be a contrarian, but unless the target is very, very near a discrimination point, or if you've got a nearby co-located trash target, then no. None.
I've tested many times with absolutely no difference in depth between various patterns...on clean signals.

The problem is, that in the real world, there's almost always some co-located trash nearby.
So hunting with a more open screen will actually 'appear' to have more 'practical' depth because of that.

It's why I also hunt with a mostly open screen unless the trash is just driving me nuts.
It's hard to describe just how much junk people lose/toss in the ground.

trojdor is right but if you use heavy disc you have to slow down your coil speed . The more disc you use the slower the coil has to be swung.

As to open screen it will separate faster which let's you swing at a faster pace now with all that disc the machine has to run through more processing and requires a slower swing . sube

And not to be a contrarians companion, but this is true. This is why everybody always says DISCRIMINATION COSTS YOU DEPTH! While it appears that way,the only things that will cost you depth are size of coil and sensitivity. The coils field receiving unwanted targets are almost always the culprit, and if these signals are within the discriminated section, this results in a null and no coin. An open-ish screen will yield more information that the user has to decipher,IMO. In other words,Mike is right.

I concur. I hunt with an open screen or just a tad of discrimination. No need to restate what has been said by the other folks

No waffle please folk........

THERE IS NO LOSS OF DEPTH.....when simply switching between Screens 1 and 2.

SENSITIVITY CONTROLS DEPTH...

Screen changing only affects what YOU choose to hear and 'see'

END OF STORY........Matt

I also must say, with any of the 3 different machines I have, nothing has affected my deep coin count as sensitivity has. It is really amazing how fast you can start reaching WAY down there, provided the conditions are OK and there isn't a ton-o-trash. I avoided turning up the sensitivity for a LONG time because it wasn't as silky smooth as much lower levels or Auto. Live and learn I guess. Sorry for booting a dead horse...

I stand corrected, not what I was trying to say. What I was trying to get across is that if you have a deeper "good" target below a "junk" target, you will not pick it up in pattern #1 if it is set to discriminate out the junk target. And you will be able to pick up the deeper "good" target if pattern 2 has a more open screen.
