Past few day's goodies...

My camera's been acting up, so I haven't been able to post some of my goodies lately. Here's some pics.

Last Wednesday, I went to a spot I've been wondering about. I know the carnies set up here for a couple fairs a year, and it's a big picnic spot three times a year for fireworks. I decided to see if there was anything hiding in the dirt. I walked to the spot from my vehicle, GB'ed, and started searching. I wasn't that far from water, so the ground is nice and moist, one of the few areas here that is moist. Not to long into the hunt, I got a nice High Coin signal that indicated 6" down. The really weird part, is that is didn't bounce to iron at all. Normally, in this dirt, coins that deep bounce Iron-High Coin. I dug it up, and recovered a 1919 Wheat. Ok, the game's afoot!

I didn't really have long that day, and I was just scouting around for possible goodies, so I was using my 8" coil, and moving kind of fast, not in any particular pattern. Not really a good recipe for success. However, my last signal was a solid High Coin hit from an indicated 4". Here's what I recovered:

I need to work on my pinpointing, as the target was deep in the side of the hole at 6 o'clock. It's not visible in this shot, but I managed to break it at the stamp for sterling. I knew that I was the one that broke it, since as soon as I realized it was broken, I passed it over the coil, and got a Pulltab signal. It wouldn't go up to High Coin at all. Oh well, not the first time I've broke a ring, but hopefully, it's the last.

I've since found 6 Wheat's there. I've also been taking my time, working a grid pattern, with my 10.5" coil. Today, I took Laurie out with me, as she wanted to go. She's beginning to learn how to spot stuff, as she eyeballed a percussion cap from the CW reenactment last weekend. I started working my pattern again. Wouldn't you know it, not a couple minutes goes by, and I get a High Coin signal, soft, clear, and unwavering, at an indicated 6". I opened a plug, and the target's still in the hole. I loosened up the dirt in the bottom of the hole, and started scanning clods of dirt. One of this sounded off loud and strong. I broke it in half, and saw the reeded edge of a dime sticking out. I figured I had a silver dime, as the metal was grey-colored, not the red color that clad gets at this spot from the constantly moist dirt. I broke open the clod to further expose the dime, and saw part of the reverse side of a Merc. Sweet! Here's what it looks like after I got it home and cleaned up.

It almost has Full Split Bands. Now, before you all get on my case, it's a common-date coin, so I polished it up with some baking soda.

Not ten feet away, I got another solid, High-Coin hit at an indicated 6". This recovery was basically just like the first one, with me checking clods of dirt until one sang out that sweet song. Breaking that clod open, again, I saw the reeded edge of a dime, again, it was grey-colored. I grinned, and broke open the clod to reveal another Merc, a '44D. Here's the pic:

I started the day with two lovely ladies, back-to-back. That's a first for me, getting two silver in a row like that. I ended up getting another Wheat, a '57D.
