Parts is Parts: GT Hipmount Bag, spare lower rod.

For you multi-model Sovereign owners out there, I have a couple questions.

I'd like to get a hipmount bag for my XS-2a Pro. Is there anything about the 'new' GT hipmount bag that would prevent it from working with the older Sovereigns?

Is there something better that I should consider for occasional beach hunting? I want to keep the sand out, protect the housing and not have strain on the connector. And comfortable would be nice.

Second, any difference in the lower isolation rods with older and newer sovereigns? Changing coils is so much easier when each coils has a lower rod.

Appreciate any feedback.

Rich,
I just bought an XS2A pro on ebay, new in the box. The lower iso rods are the same for all Sovs. I just received my new one today for the WOT coil I received yesterday. I also bought one of Pluggers straight shafts. It's an excellent design and truly balances the machine. I've seen lots of problems with Excal coil cables due to the stress of hipmounting; that's why I went with the straight shaft and the control box on the rear of the shaft. Keeps it higher than a hip mount. One caveat..My box has been modified with a remote A/M switch I can mount anywhere, so the rear mount of the box isn't a problem, since I like to hunt in A/M and switch to disc over a target. If you don't hunt that way, you won't miss easy access to the knobs.

I use a 2 gallon resealable plastic bag over the box with the cables punched through the bottom and electrical taped tight with a scrap of terrycloth towel underneath to catch any drops that run down the cable toward the box. The resealable end of the bag over the faceplate makes for easy access for the occasional sensitivity tweak. The weak spot in any waterproofing is the headphone jack. Water running down the cable can easily work into the jack. I punch the plug right thru the bag directly into the jack, and wrap another small piece of terry around the cable just outboaod of the plug to absorb errant water. And I don't hunt in the rain, again due to water running down the cables.

I'll be attacking the beach today with my Sand Shark, since we're still in the clutches of the nor'easter and I won't chance the Sov in the rain.

Thanks VBDave,

Like minds - Pluggers straight shaft showed up a couple days ago and I put everything together yesterday. I took it for a quick swing over at a well hunted park I haven't been to in a while. It sure balances the BBS 1000 coil well. Much easier to swing that heavy coil than the original S-rod. The quick 30 minute hunt was a bust. The area of the park I chose to hunt was hard as concrete. We haven't had much in the way of rain the last 3 or 4 weeks and the ground is HARD and DRY. My lesche digger was nearing the bending point when leaning on it and it got dark before I could relocate to a better location. I do like the search rod and the position of the meter on top of the handle. The meter can turned toward the operator about 10-15* making it easier to watch the numbers. Having the detector housing further behind the armrest helps the balance, but makes it more difficult to access the mode change switch.

Did you do install your own jack for the remote switch? If so, how did the modification go? What does your remote switch look like? If you have some pics I'd love to see them.

I did the meter rescaling a week or so ago, so the meter readout is much more stable and on the 180 scale which is nice. The worst part about the rescaling is opening the meter housing. The rest is cake. Adding a remote switch jack like you have is next on my list and is really a must do for me. I switch back and forth frequently when hunting and evaluating targets. Being a newbie, I haven't tried hunting in reverse for any extended period of time. Maybe later.

At the same time I bought my XS-2a Pro, I picked up an 8" coinsearch coil with a 4' cable. It is a feather compared to the BBS 1000. I need to pick up an extra lower rod to ease the chore of coil swapping. Looks like I can pick up one from pretty much any dealer. How much did the lower rod, washers and bolt kit run you and where did you get them? You might need to PM me with that info.

Thanks for the feedback. Congrats on finding a brand new XS-2a Pro this long after they were discontinued. That's a nice find. Did you get the warranty card too?

Good luck

The new blue bag for the GT is smaller than the older ones, even the gt is a struggle to get it in so the older XS etc might not fit, also its for hip mounting only and the lid is hardly enough to close with headphones pligged in and keeps opening, i used to pass the headphone cable up through the same hole the coil cable comes out of to get the lit shut properly.
The black ones should be ok if you can find one, you just missed one in the clasifieds this week
