I thought about whether to post here or another section but it seemed appropriate to continue on here (better exposure?).
My friend at the end of the “jug of coins” adventure mentions his grandmother had passed down a gold coin through the family. Was wondering if my books had any info on it, only thing he knew was it was a Double Eagle and 1907. Oh, and it had Roman numerals around the edges. Ok, I look it up and 1907s maybe worth $1400 retail, sweet.
Not seeing Roman Numerals I fear its a fake or promotional coin and I dont see anything even close to being in the book, none the less he said he would swing by and let me have it to look at. That works for me!
He drops it off and Im researching fake 1907 Double Eagles but nothing coming up. I start to examine it and it has stars around the edges, not numerals. Feels heavy, looks pretty shiny, but I’m just not sure. Wow, I find E Pluribus Unom On the exterior rim (not Roman but maybe he thought that was Roman). I’m trying to grade by book standards, I’m no expert but the feathers and wear spots are all pretty clear. Up til now I had not looked at the date, imagine my surprise when I found MCMVII where the date should be. Ok, this has to be a fake……
In the 2019 Red Book at page 302 starts 1907 dates. I turn back one one page and 301 is an advertisement and 300 is a coin that is what I’m holding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sitting there speechless, basically a zombie as the value is somewhere around $9000 plus. For the love of God what is High Relief, Wire Rim, or Flat Rim? It has the Lettered Edge, what is ultra high relief and is THIS ONE??? Why is the room spinning???????
Holy Crap is this really a basically rare coin in detecting land???? In anybodies land? Can you feel my confusion???? He says keep it for awhile, learn! WHAT????
So I take it outside and run the F75 over it, a super solid 92. Thats most likely a silver dollar in my world. Ok, need to get jkline over here and see what the mighty Etrac and CTX3030 does…… I kinda set him up by concealing a silver dollar, a silver half, and a silver quarter with square nails and nickels. Messed him up too (ok that was bad of me) but then cleared the board and put the gold monster down. He was registering silver dollar pretty much as well. I told him to pull back the cloth cover and the world went silent for about 10 seconds. Yup all the same questions and yes its real……
My friend is leaving the coin with me to experiment with, No I will not bury it, Yes Im carrying it in my jockey shorts pouch, No I dont care, hell Yes Im going to experiment with it. How often does anybody get a $20 gold piece to play with.
For us F75 crowd it simply slammed loud and very clear 92 with the SEF 12x10 Butterfly. On the F5 same clear hit but 91 with the factory 5” coil.
Im still star struck, my opinion this coin could easily hit EF40 or above and I get to play with for awhile.
Life is good.
