Found this brass plate today.. it has some cool engraving on it.. im not exactly sure what it is though... found at a spot that gives up finds from 1750-1950.. i assume it's part of a weather vane due to compass like directions on it... unfortunately i lost my car keys while hunting and seeing how it's a half mile walk each way through field and woods i didnt even bother gonig back lookin for them... thankfully i hid a spare key on my car several years ago just in case such a situation occurs. ..[attachment 338117 IMG_20161120_154725481_HDR1.jpg] happy huntin..

goggled the name and a compass come up...I think its very old ,,now o find your car keys..gregginohio
makes sense that it would be some kind of compass... this area was settled by scotch irish folks in the mid 1700s so possibly it may have been part of the original survey equipment. .. if i find the car keys great, if not ,no big deal.. i just gotta get more spares made before i lose the next set..lol..

As per info i got on the uk forum it appears this was part of an early 1700s surveyor's compass.. here's one very very simular. ..[attachment 338299 IMG_20161125_164736746_HDR1.jpg][attachment 338300 IMG_20161125_1659107582.jpg]

awesome find BHPA! Thank God for the backup key plan :)

Thanks ELP, good hearing from you.. i ran into 2 arrowhead hunters out in that field 2 weeks after i lost them and they found em in 5 minutes. .. the plate i found and the other one that was pictured on the uk forum both have a small 5 and 6 stamped into the narrow ends where the holes are drilled in , which leads me to believe that both were made from the same blank plates... think spring lol...

That is a very cool find. I just wonder what in the world was it doing at that location where you detected it? For such a finely engraved plate, there must have been a well to do person, family, house, store or something. There has to be some more awesome loot at that area!! Keep looking!!

Thanks BHPA been busy with work and all. As I look out the window this morning and see snow coming down....Spring seems far off lol Although in another 90 days Spring should be knocking on our doors. Then again, I have witnessed some freak, big Winter storms slam into us in April. Have you ever researched the area you hunt for what may have stood there at one time? Seems to me like there could have been an early farm / small community on the land. Definitely a neat find. Glad to hear your car keys have been recovered.
