Befor it gets started I am not anti Explorer guy it is that there are people getting started into this hobby and buying this as there first machine and getting frustrated and selling them and quitting the hobby. The same goes for the ones that buy china junk machine can't find anything and quit.I am just trying to be very bias to the particular use of this machine,I thought I was an idiot because I couldn't figure this thing out, what it was I had it figured out just didn't know it till I started running other machine in the same areas.I will continue to grow a found relationship with this machine I hope but it will take time for me to figure out when it is apporiate for me to pull the Big E out and when to leave it put. Thanks for reading and those of you that having been having trouble it just takes alot of reading and field use and understanding,a second detector will I think help you learn the Big E better.Try this run over an area with one unit mark what you find take the other unit go over and see if you find anything new and fnd all the items you previously marked write what you think they are and dig away.Compare your Big E with your other unit.God Bless and Happy Hunting

Hi Rick, I'm sure there are many folks that have made their 1'st detector an Explorer and have felt the same way you described it. You're blessed with having several detectors at home to compare it to and I'm sure that it has some detecting weak points, I just have'nt found them yet. Yes it's expensive, heavy and hard to understand and does'nt come with everything one may need right out of the box but it is an awsome machine.
I'm on a constant learning curve with mine and it's a challenge to say the least. But ... I have been in seeded competition hunts, relic hunts, beach hunts etc. and it has performed extremely well all around for me. As for the iron issue you talked about, I have'nt had that problem yet, I consistantly find silver and copper mixed in and under heavy iron at multiple depths. Yeah ... I imagine it does look funny to onlookers when they see me circling a hole as you put it, but the goodies keep on coming out of the ground.
I guess it's all about what works best for the hunter and the situation at hand. Example: I have pulled 22 short casings at 13" down that 10 other detectorist could not get a signal on at all at any setting and they we're all using high end Whites, Fishers, Garretts etc. One other Explorer was there too, as soon as he matched my settings his Explorer hit it. No other machine (present) could get a signal on the 22 short at any angle or setting. Granted a 22 short is not a valuable find by any means but it did leave some strange dissapointed looks on the other hunters out there that could'nt get a hit on it and YES we do compare signals allot when we get together .. as of yet I have not had the situation arise where I could'nt tune my Explorer to hear what another brand machine was hearing.
About the pinpointing issue, well I'll have to give Sunray their due, that X-1 probe has been worth every penny to me, unless I'm having to dig a real deepie,it sure does cut down on my retreival time. And hey, if your digging real deep holes and bringing out the sweet stuff it makes it all worth while to me. I'll hang onto mine until something better comes along. H.H.

well many folks plunge themselves in too deep with a lot of things in life just human nature now to want the best one can have and without any knowledge prior can really be a major setback....hey thats life, you make a choice and you stick with it otherwise your always second guessing yourself and your judgement of things...dunno maybe it's me? To bad it a disposable world we live in ...easy come easy go.....persistance works fine for me......HH Bri

When I made the decision to buy my first explorer the dealer told me" Now don't take your other machine wiht you. Give this thing a chance and see just what it will do. You won't be sorry." Well I am not sorry and I am really pleased that I bought it. I hunt with guys that get so upset that their explorers don't work like their old whites or fishers they just curse and quit. well that is OK if thats what they choose to do. Me, now I know that there is old stuff there and that this is the machine that will get it. The explorer has consistantly blown the others away. Use what you like best, but really all this moaning about that other brand. Wow. I have two explorers and would purchase anoyher if the price were right so think about it.

I guess I am a little confused about the statement, all this moaning about the other brand.wow.part...please explain moaning is complaining I don't think I was complaining.

I have used many units of all brands and found the XS to be one of the easiest ones to learn....heck it sniffs old coppers out for me all the time and gold rings and silver..all kinds of good stuff.....first thing listen to the book and use preset if your a first time buyer because obviously you got no experiance and knowledge so why would you max it out and blow your mind people make it hard not the unit......s-l-o-w down and relax

Many try to go to the advanced mode before they learn the Explorer, myself included as i thought I knew the Sovereign well that the Explorer will be no problem.
Now I am still learning myself as I have switched to differnt detector to learn them too. The Explorer will realy impress me at times as it did on Wendesday when I got a 1910 wheatie at 9 inches, then a 1906 Barber dime at 10 inches that had a nail on top of it. Not much of a signal and many would have left it as trash, but a person just has to use a Explorer for a while to know what to listen for.
Minelab recomend you leave it in the quick start mode untill you have around 40 hours on it. It will do well for a person, but if you dont understand it than going to advanced mode and doing some differnt setting will only confuse you more.
One of the guys around here stayed in the quick start for over 2 years as he like what it could do after he learned it, but for the first week or 2 he wanted to sell it.
The Explorer is a great detector and you can see some of the great finds on the FBS fourm from those that have taken the time to learn it.
To be honest I wanted to wrap my Explorer around a tree at times, but the more I use it the more good coins I find at depth and close to trash than I thought was possible.
The secret is taking the time to learn it and have some patience with it, like you say you have to learn to walk before you can run and you have to learn to stand before you walk too.
The Explorer is not for everyone, only those that want the deep coins and the ones next to trash the others have left behind as we see this by the finds posted on the fourms.
If you want to hunt clad there is many detectors that will do this better than the Explorer, but if you want the deep ones than the Explorer is the one you want.

I have used many brands and I have found more this week with the explorer than I have found with any combination of machines that I have used in the past! Don't get me wrong all of the other machines are good and do have there place. But I now preferre the Explorer over all others.. Just my opinion!!
Mike

Yes mike, I am of that same opinion. I prefer the explorer. This forum has helped me a lot and I do my best to help others as I have been helped But some of the posts I just don't know as if there is any helping except on another forum or may be one on one in the field. I would seek out the right place to ask for help. That may not make any sense but it is the best I can do.
