This tutorial is for Adobe Photoshop Elements, and is meant to help beginners. It got so big, that I had to do it in two parts.
Part 1 shows you how to darken the background of an image, but leave the object of interest untouched. You can use this same technique if you want to lighten the background, or even change it

Great job, and thanks for putting all the work into these two posts. I'm way too lazy to go into that much detail to help other people in the forum. Now I feel guilty for all the short answers I've been giving that probably didn't really help anybody. Again, great job FOD and keep up the good work! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">

I don't know why the Magic Wand took so long for you though. I just copied your picture and opened it in Photoshop. I clicked on the magic wand and making sure it was set at 100%, clicked on the rose. Then I held down the shift key and just clicked on the parts of the rose that were not selected the first time. I selected until I had it all.
Then I clicked on control C to copy it.
It took less than 30 seconds. The trick is to have the magic wand set at 100%.
You sure do great tutorials. Nim is lazy and I don't know diddly Baaahahahahh

Just another way of doing things. Not true about not helping others..., there are all levels of competence on this forum. I like helping beginners, because I'm a beginner, and explaining it to others helps me to better understand it myself.
I'm retired and I have lots of time for this. I spent 30 years as tech a training instructor, and it takes time for those wounds to heal. It's an addiction, and I love doing it.
Thanks for the compliments.

I tend to be a bit conservative with the selection tools (and the Paint Bucket tool as well). Tried 100% and it worked just great.
Thanks.

Great post and good input from all. A lot of this would never occur to me without all this support. Knowing this stuff is good but you gotta have talent, so I hope some rubs off you all onto me. Now onto part 2.
Thanks Dave
