Park Hunting

Hey guys, Cliff here, I was out just a few weeks ago at a park where they had a town activity the day before. I decided to metal detect for awhile to see what I could find and while I was digging up those pull tabs and lots of pennies, there was two young girls ( 7-9 ) came up to me and said "Hey mister, what are you looking for, and I replied "GOLD" and then they said " have you found any gold out here yet, and I said "NO, I keep finding money (coins). Then to my surprise one them said "Hey mister, just in case you don't find any gold, maybe you should keep the money that you find so you won't go home empty handed" and I reply that was a great idea and I would do that... I spent a couple of hours there looking and walked away with a smile and a little over five dollars in change and lots of pull tabs.. Another great day of doing what I like best... Cliff

That was nice Cliff. But I believe you'll find later on that saying you only finding sharp glass, rusty nails and snakes. This will keep most kids away from you. I like to be nice but it's hard when a kid snatches you hard earned zinc from the hole. It could have been a ring! Do not show anyone at the park any nice finds. If they say they lost a ring ask them for the description. You show a good find to someone and they say that it's theirs then what? When people start coming around I leave.

I never thought of that, good idea.. Maybe I should keep some junk in my pouch in case they want to see my findings. I was at a newer school one day and let the kids dig for what ever reading I had on my detector and they had lots of fun doing that, but now I'll start being more careful.. Thanks again and have a great metal detecting day... Cliff

Cliff,
There is nothing wrong at all letting some kids have fun. I have had them dive down in the water while scooping targets and try to reach in my scoop. I was warned by a water hunter before I started. I have had kids simply ask "can I have that?" Once you give them a coin they won't stop. I always keep tabs, nails and a piece of glass in my pouch when hunting around people. Sometimes you have to show them something.

I did that today at a high school. I showed them all the pull-tabs I found and then they left, of-course I didn't show them my eight pennies, one dime, and eighteen nickles that I got today, but then mother-nature called and I had to leave... Otherwise it was a great day...

I agree with keep ing a little junk in my pouch to show people. Sometimes people say something smart like why are you taking the kids money? I reply with I'm cleaning up more than anything, and i show them some nails or a torn up pop can and ask them would they like for there kids to step on these and they leave me alone. Works for me.

I am thinking about getting a heavy duty clear plastic bag for junk targets to have it hanging from my belt so that all of them could see without asking.
Where to get one with tie-up?

On the beaches, I use my headphones to pretend I don't hear the questions. Unless it is a young lady in a bikini then I can hear plenty good.

I like talking to people when they ask if I found anything for the most part though. I think of it as being an ambassador for the hobby.

I really don't have the crowd that most of you have around here like you guys have there. Most of the time they look and ask a few questions and then move on or they watch and then move on. It's really not so bad here in Montana...
