PaPa-Joe Sifter Craze

china-clipper

Well folks, saw it and had to have one. I picked up a swim noodle and a mini laundry basket from Walmart and with a few tie-wraps created my own "PaPa-Joe" surf sifter. I'll be using it tomorrow; thanks PaPa-Joe for the great idea!

Nice job china-clipper. I know you're gonna like hunting with your sifter! Papa-joe's has the right idea.

I started out using swim noodles but they wouldn't float enough stuff and they were very unstable in waves on Lake Michigan. I wanted something more substantial. This thing will hold many scoops of bottom, my scoop, my vibra probe, drinking water, trash bag & still float me if really needed.

Heres the pic.

Wow, that's one heavy-duty unit. All I need is a sifter to hold one scoop of material. Here in Connecticut, I have to wear two-layer rubber-coated shoulder-length gauntlet gloves in the winter surf. A couple of times I've dropped a find in the water attempting to remove it from my scoop with the awkward and clumsy gloves. Now, all I have to do is drop the whole scoop load into the sifter and pick out the find and place it in my "keeps" bag. I must admit, yours is more sea-worthy.

On our local club site we've actually been discussing mounting some type of flag for additonal visiability, between the jet skis and boats sometimes it gets a little scary. I attach with a 8' rope and usually don't even know its there except in high wind or right near shore where the waves are breaking. I very seldom if ever look for targets in my scoop anymore! Scoop it, dump it in sifter, move on to next target. really saves time. Also I don't have to carry my scoop any more that sucker (see picture) makes my left arm about 6" longer at the end of the day if I do. That was the reason I originally started meshing with a sifter, now I wouldn't hunt without it.
I'm quite certain you'll be delighted with the return on your labor!

I got my scoop from Al Holden, at ProStock Detectors here in Michigan. I like mine, and it really does a great job in Rocky bottom of Lake Michigan. Where did you get the inner tube sifter. It's cool.

I used a pair of Trapper's Gloves last Spring at an old swimming hole in MI. KaptainKosmic ought to remember my postings about that...

Anyways, I found that the bulky fingers on the gloves weren't conducive to picking up pennies and dimes that were laying flat on the mesh of my floating sifter. It is possible, but it takes a bit of effort. Luckily, I didn't have waves to contend with, just current, and the first day there, a couple of kids that didn't know how to cast their fishing poles.

like Skully that was full of treasure and either didn't have time to post or didn't want anyone to know you had hit the mother lode! The only other possibility would have been alien obduction.

I agree with you about the gloves, wetsuit gloves cause same problem.
With coins I just let them lay in sifter, with rings etc I take my gloves off and snatch the goodies.

We don't have a baby sitter any more, so I can't take "all-day" trips until the little ones are older, hopefully next year.

I have been doing some hunting on land, when I can. I usually post over on the Friend and Finds board for those. Got a nice '28D Standing Lib quarter, a War Nickel, and eyeballed a HUGE 9.1 g 14K gold ring a couple weeks ago. Scraped lots from building demo's can be productive.
