Panning for gold

Do you find panning for gold a waste of time or little us on owning a pan for your application of gold hunting?
If you do use a pan, is it a particular color and size you like? Metal or plastic? Thanks.

For me, a gold pan comes in handy lots of times, just to check a stream, to hold dirt to check with a detector, I like the green Garret gold pans the best , I use a small one and the large 10 in. one.

Gold pans are a great tool and a very low-cost way to find out if gold gives you the fever...you don't really need one for nugget hunting with a detector as it is ackward to carry one when detecting (in my opinion)...if I were backpacking in gold country I would carry a medium Garret-gravitytrap pan or equal. If you are dredging or sluicing you will need one for the finish work...cleaning the cons....I don't live near watery gold areas anymore so I don't do much panning but it was a great thrill in my early days of gold-hunting.

I pan a couple times a year mostly to sample potential areas, and if an area seems promising, I might set up a sluice, or just pan for awhile.
I just don't do it often as it is not the best thing for my back, but it can be addicting. I have several pans of various sizes and colors. I mostly use some of the older green Garrett pans. Keep an eyeball out for gemstones during the classification process.
Now I want to go again

Found a pic from my last panning in February. Should have added it to the previous reply but didn't hit me then - Ding!!!!
