Painting A Search Coil Anyone Ever Do It?

A1MTD

New member
Hello Fellow Detectorist I have a Sea Hunter Mk II with both stock coil and larger coil. the problem I have is my vision is not the same as it use to be. While hunting on our Ocean salt water beaches sometimes the wind stirs up the surf in the water. While I'm only up to waste deep or more or even if the water is around my knees I can't see the Black search coils very well underwater.
I noticed Whites use a yellow coil on their beach detectors, as I think this might help me see the coils better if I could paint my coils a bright yellow or fluorescent orange or yellow slime green or other more vi sable colour.
My question is has anyone here on this forum ever painted their search coils a brighter colour? If so what type of paint do I need to do this without it leaching out in the water or coming off ?

Any help or comments with this would be appreciated.
Thanks I

Hi, never heard of anyone painting the coil, I understand what your saying. I recently needed some different colors of electrical tape, came in white, yellow, red etc or some of the decorative duct tapes they make now. Maybe give them a try.

I just saw a detector on feebay with a coil painted green so he could see it better. There is plastic krylon paint out there and I am sure it will work just fine.

I've used quality acrylic white paint on the wader coil
being dark it was hard to see.
Worked good as being very visible in stained/dirty water.
May have to be recoated ever so often as tendency to peel
from sand abrasions.
I used Exterior outdoor acylic its a plastic paint cleaned with water.
No chemicals in it will affect the plastics in the coil.
Some tapes have metallic contents.

Why not try a bright colored tape ? Possibly a bright duct tape they seem to stick better. If not I would think a paint meant for outdoor plastic would work as good as any. Just scuff with scotch bright pad first and paint. I would stay away from lacquer paints , they have dissolving qualities that might effect your coil. Just paint a small strip on the top of the coil and go for it.

I have a cheap loaner Bounty Hunter for which no one makes a coil cover. So I sprayed on some bedliner to serve as an ablative in place of a coil cover. Works great.

Note: before painting, paint a piece of cardboard and let it dry. Then run your detector over it and see if the paint contains any metallic particles.

Thanks everyone for your tips and ideas. I never thought a tape would stay very sticky long after being soaked a few times, even duct tape will fall off after a extended soaking in water. I wonder if Teflon tape would work if I can get it around here.

Teflon tape really isn't tape, it doesn't stick. Its good to seal leaks in gas and water pipe threads. Different color electrical tape is waterproof and will stay put for a long time.

You can get electrical, duct and gaffer tape in fluorescent orange. I use gaffer tape on mine when wading. Helps allot! The difference between gaffer and duct is when you remove it there's no adhesive residue left behind.

glow-on.com. It comes in paint or adhesive material. Plus you can get it in different colors. I use it on my guns & a little on my coil.

I used electrameric-not sure of spelling but its a white roof coating that goes on as a liquid and dries into a rubber.makes seeing it easier-only put it on the top

Not sure but at one time Marine paint the kind they used on boats had lead in the paint I know the last can I got from a friend just back about 5 or 6 years ago came from a Army surplus store and contained lead. Today lead in paint is a No No I'm not sure if they replaced the lead with something more environmentally safe or not today. thanks for the suggestion.

By the way I thank all of you replying to this topic, you have all submitted to me some practical advice, and I forgot which ones said I don't need to cover top and bottom, just the top would do if I'm using some sort of paint product. Thanks your right just enough to see the dang thing under murky water. Thanks Joel in Winnipeg for his suggestion as well I have a white coil on my Older Fisher 1265X and I believe your right white should also be a good colour to use under water. Maybe if I Finnish painting the search coils I'll work on painting the sand scoop handle and basket yellow as well :crylol:
Thanks to everyone

i used white nail polish and just painted a pin stripe on the top side of the coil, then i took pink nail polish and painted a round dot in the middle of the top of the coil to help pinpoint.... in clear water i can see it 5 ft under no problem..... on a side note i notice you are from nova sciota...my father used to own a nice chunk of property near scottsdale ,margaree forks area..... i only got up ther one time, nice rolling hills, beautiful landscape and the neighbors we met were very nice...... 24 hours drive one way...... like someone else mentioned.dont use any metalic paint as this could affect performance..... happy huntin....

Gaff tape is used for music, DJ, convention and other set ups. Try Hotel Supply or DJ & Music supply places.

Go to your local sign shop the bright reflective sign sheeting used on road signs etc works fantastic they can even put it on for you.I use it on my detector coils,on my pin pointer so I see it where I set it in grass etc. Plus you would be surprised colors they have
