Packrat Nests?

Canine

New member
I ran across an old shack a couple of weeks ago while driving with the dog. When I stepped into the shack, the smell about knocked me over! It even felt diseased. Did not have my detector nor a hazmat suit, but got to wondering if Packrat nests would be a good place to look?

That's one of those try it and see questions. I'm thinking that in the areas where you might do that it would be wise to be cautious of rodent born diseases. Unless the area was an old mining or logging camp that was in use for many years I doubt that there would be much of value in the nests.

This old shack is isolated, but who knows? Might be quite surprised. Will be heading thataway in a couple weeks & will post my findings. :)

I was out mushroom hunting along the Platte River a few years ago and came upon an old, dilapidated, shack. I went inside to snoop around and there was
an old couch and chair in there. I flipped the couch on it's back to see if any coins jingled. Well it was loaded with change... and mice! Must have been a hundred
of them come flying out of there. I kicked it for a couple minutes to shag the rest of them out then tore the fabric off the bottom. It kinda stunk. there was a lot of
change in there, and mounds of mouse poop. Did the same thing to the chair, with similar results. If I recall there were probably 30 coins in them, with the newest ones
being in the 1930s. And quite a few silver ones. I hiked over to the river and washed my hands for a good ten minutes. Who knows how many different kinds of germs
I had on my stinky hands!

Like BarberBill pointed out.....disease

Hantaviruses are negative sense RNA viruses in the Bunyaviridae family. Humans may be infected with hantaviruses through rodent bites, urine, saliva or contact with rodent waste products. Some hantaviruses cause potentially fatal diseases in humans.

If you think its worth the risk......people in the U.S. have died from this. Its quite lethal.

Hantavirus has been proven to reside in Packrats and is a serious disease :puke:; however, when one takes the proper precautions, the contraction of viruses, bacteria, ectoparasites, etcetera is minimized. I will also be in Grizzly country, and I perceive this as more of a threat even when taking precautions. All this makes detecting exciting!

Is a great place to look...especially if you are looking for packrats:rofl:

I hunt high in the mountains and often come across remains of old log cabins and stone foundations. Most of them had dirt floors, but some with wood floors that have mostly rotted away. These are great places to MD and I often find metal things left behind like forks & spoons, tin pans, jar lids, tools, etc. Doubt that packrats brought anything inside but suppose it's possible???

In addition to looking inside, be sure to spend some time detecting where the entrance was located. Have you ever seen a photo of an old miners cabin where there wasn't a chair outside the entrance?

Finally an update. Nothing in the nests. The one on the floor had been torn apart. The one in the makeshift attic was intact but nothing showed up on the detector, so I didn't try to tear that one apart. Kinda disappointing, but now I know. :sleepy:

many years ago me and a frend found an old log cabin 1860,s and we went inside and we heard the most grizzly sounds coming from behind the wall , it was hundreds of bats, we put our tails between our legs and got out of thear , found an old dump with old wash machines and we turned the old wash machine upside down and several silver roseies and quarters came out and wheat cents,
