Overload signals:

Mtnmn

New member
Yesterday while using a new 6" DD HF coil with the sensitivity maxed out, I got an overload signal in the quarter range. In the past using the stock coil I would have almost always moved on when receiving an overload signal in that range because of assuming it was either can slaw, an aluminum can or something similar. This time because of the new coil I decided to check it out and after parting the thick grass and clover, there lay a quarter flat on the surface of the ground. Have I been missing out on some good targets by not checking out my coin range "overload signals" using the stock coil? What about Minelab's other X-T coils?

I always raise my coil a few inches , and the detector will usually give a reading.

Yup I do the same. If I am getting a strong signal 6-7" up then I know it probably is not a coin, Beale.

Triple ditto on raising the coil! Also...now I'm no Xterra expert by any means but...why are you maxing out your sensitivity? Not that it's a BAD thing but it seems that my Xterra bucks and kicks and makes noises like a rogue pony with the sensitivity maxed... I have very mild soil where I hunt, but considering some of the MINISCULE bits of metal I've found so far, I usually go over an area with moderate sens, then maybe another time with a little higher just see if there was anything that was masked the first time around. Admittedly, that's my theory for old farmsites, but it just seems there's SO much trash everywhere I hunt that I just can't get away with that much sensitivity.

sensitivity maxed has never worked for me, false signals abound, machine gets chirpy, I can run at 25 at almost every site I go to, any more than that and just asking for false signals

I'm sorry If you guys got the wrong idea that I always run my detector's sens. maxed out, far from it. It so just happened at that particular place and time while using the small coil in a relatively low trash area, I decided to try and max out my depth on it by maxing out the sens. Though I'm more than a little surprised to hear that most of you have to run your sens. in the low 20's to prevent falsing and chirping. I normally run my X-T between 26 and 28 even though I'm well aware there is supposily no more depth to be gained with a sens. setting of more than 26. I do that just because I don't normally get all the falsing and chirping that you people apparently get in your areas. Maybe living in a very low populated area might be the reason I can get away with the higher sens. setting, that and listening to the sounds of multiple targets doesn't bother me because of only being interested the high pitch tones. Do know for certain that since going exclusively to "Auto Tracking" the 6" DD HF coil has given me about an average of 2 more inches of depth than the stock coil was giving me. I was rarely finding a coin 4" deep with the stock coil, now its a regular occurrence with the 6" coil.

From Day One I have always felt there was something wrong with the depth of my stock coil just because it has never picked up on a coin deeper than 6" and only one at that depth. For instance in an area I had completely searched out with the stock coil and had did fairly well in initially, the 6" coil pulled out another 33 coins in just one trip. That is a heck of a difference! Admittedly it was from an area with a fair amt. of trash such as pull tabs, foil and sinkers...

Hmmm... I have the HF elliptical but have been hunting with the stock MF coil. I'll have to switch out and see if I've missed anything!
