overload signal

I recently hunted a a vacant lot where the ground was pretty damp and the patches of grass were quite wet.I was using my 1500 and my sens. was set at 6.There is trash in the lot but i was getting lots and lots of overload signals.I turned the sens down to 4 to check if that made a differance but it didnt,so i went back up to 6.I was still getting some good signals among all that noise but is there something i can do to correct this?
Does the overload signal cause greater target masking than regular notch discrimination?
Normally here in AZ the ground is very dry but the occasional wet conditions drive my Garretts nuts.
Thanks!!

The overload signal tells you there is a large piece of conductive material under the coil...a piece of tin, flattened can, hub-cap..it's supposed to do that. (sounds like an old telephone ringing, doesn't it <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> )

hi jon you mit want to ck out were they are hitting ie copper ect have found qtr- halfs on top of the ground or down just an " that were overloading found this to be true for both my 1250 and 2500 could just be it only happens up here in ny HH cal

John,
I understand the function of the overload and that it usually means large shallow trash but i hunted the same place in dry conditions and the overload signals were not nearly as frequent as when i hunted the place in damp to wet conditions. The only factor that changed was the moisture on th ground. The machine barely had a chance to quiet down between overload signals.I moved to a area with no wet grass and less damp soil and it improved. It has to be a moisture effect. How low will you turn your sens?I was on 6 went down to 4 with no change in overload sigs.so i went back up to 6.
Thanks Jon

CAL,
Im thinking moisture is the cause.Moisture usually increases the targets signal. But the machine was just going nuts in the plases where the grass was wet. When i moved to a dryer area it calmed down and i could get good clean hits. But adjusting my sens from 6 down to 4 did not improve things. How low on sensitivity have you hunted?

jon i start out running sens at @ 8-9 and then back it off to 6-7.5 a lot less falseing HH cal

The overload signal is designed to indicate large targets, but it can also go into overload on very high mineralised soils. If the soil has a high concentration of iron mineralisation, the soil can appear as a large target to the detector. To help rectify this problem, change over to a DD coil, eg 14" x 10".
Hope this helps out.
Regards,
Phil

But the moisture could make it a little more agitated to large metal.

Jon,
I suspect that what you are dealing with is salt. In arid regions evaporation of water results in a buildup of salts at the surface. When it does rain, the salts dissolve.
