Outlaw - Vaquero shoot out!

So when I got the Outlaw I thought, if it's even nearly as good as my Vaquero, it's going to be an excellent detector. I've been evaluating my Outlaw now for about a week and thought I'd take a couple hours and compare the depth of my Outlaw to my Vaquero. Although these tests are controlled, they're not perfect, so I perform the test multiple times and average out the individual results. I used a quarter as the test target. The settings on both detectors were - discrimination set to minimum, threshold at 3:00, I then incrementally increased the Sensitivity from minimum, to 8, 10 then max.

Here are the results in inches:

--------------------Outlaw-------Vaquero
Sens at min------7.0-------------7.0
Sens at 8---------8.0-------------8.0
Sens at 10-------9.0-------------9.0
Sens at max----11.0-----------13.0

I really impressed and somewhat surprised with these results. I truly thought the "V" would have an edge in depth, if it does, it's slight. The linearity of the Sens range on the Outlaw, as you can see, is excellent. The Outlaw is also very stable at max sens, where the Vaquero was doing a good bit of chattering. The remarkable depth in the "red zone" on the Vaquero gives it the ability to be "Super Tuned", nice to have when your going for extra deep targets in Disc mode. I also did the test with the Disc set to just accept a nickle (cherry picking mode) and again with the disc set to just reject a pull tab. In both tests there was no loss/change in depth - very impressive. I also used a dime as my test target and there was decrease in depth by an inch +/- on both detectors - no surprise there. Again, under critically controlled conditions there may indeed be a difference between the two detectors, but from what I'm seeing with my test conditions, within the numerical range of the detectors disc control, no discernible difference. Nice job Outlaw, nice jobTesoro!

I really like the discrimination on the Outlaw. It has a lot of discrimination dial range from foil to pull tab.

I totally agree. This Outlaw has just taken our degree of success up a few notches.

Mike,
Appreciate the updates!

One thing to keep in mind when air testing a quarter as a comparison between a Vaquero and the Outlaw is that the H.O.T. series detectors air test deeper on a nickle than a quarter. After I first read that a while back, I verified with the Cibola and Tejon I have. The

Thanks for the comments tvr. Yes, I'm familiar with the differences, cool stuff isn't it. I actually plot coins on each of my detectors. Doing this helps me in the field. Yes like other Tesoros the targets can be ID'd by the tone/beep, around the edges and the disc points - in and out. I can say this, the Outlaw is a differnt breed and I'm liking it!

Sounds great to me.

The more I read the better I like it! Thanks for the tests, Beale.

Best discriminating circuit I've seen in a long time. Couple that with great depth and you have one of the best Detectors out today. I'm very impressed with the Outlaw.

Have you tried the outlaw in a iron infested site yet? I am wondering if it will perform on par with the vaquero? As far as recovery speed and picking out good targets while discing out most of the iron.

Can you say its better than the Vaquero? or it just saves you from digging more junk?

Better? No, just different. Both are excellent, both have a place where one may be better then the other. I have both and wouldn't get rid of either one. The "V" a bit more simplistic but offers extra depth (in the red zone) when needed. The Outlaw excellent disc and more vesitile. The Vaquero or the Outlaw, which one should I get? Man, what a great problem to have.

Appreciate your testing and comments. I give kudos to Tesoro for bringing out a detector that is compatible with the many earlier, 5 pin coils out here. As a detectorist with multiple
