Outlaw coming!

Wtg Dan. Nice that you can use all the coils with your Deleon. I use my mostly in yards but it really excels in ball fields and schools.

You got yourself a great deal on those coils and a good detector as well.

.............to own every Tesoro ever made. And now that you have this many going, the wife will never be able to notice a new one in the bunch............they all look the same......
Just pack some away from view............in your closet .............never hurts to add to the arsenal.

you will find it a smooth running machine , but the No motion is like riding a bull it wants to throw you off. keep it ground balanced ,and use the retune to keep it inline , but the threshold is very telling , that is threshold AM

when you get a chance dan b would you mind comparing the Outlaw to the Cortes and the Deleon? Ive been looking at the Cortes for a awhile but decided to wait to see the Cazador. Thanks for your time

Im mostly thinking depth and speed thanks again

I had the Outlaw out for the first time today in two locations. The first was my front boulevard in front of my house. I was able to retrieve another 12 coins, but nothing worth mentioning. I then took it to a schoolyard I've been pounding away at with the Vaquero and the Deleon. I chose an area I haven't covered yet. I ran the disc up around pull tab to see how that went. It was very effective on our Canadian coins. I also found an unusual amount of American coins from the 60's. Coincidence I guess. It's a very smooth machine. Running at pull tab is very quiet. However, I was not able to distinguish the audio signal for can slaw from the clad. I also couldn't hear any distinction between bottle caps and clad. I can hear a difference on the Vaquero, so much so, that it's unnecessary to thumb the disc. However, it was the first day.

I tried the large DD coil, and I'm not really caring for that. I've never liked DD coils, and this one is no exception. It's extra weight throws off the balance, I don't like how it pin points off the tip or heal, and I didn't see any perceivable difference in depth in air tests. The audio doesn't seem as crisp, almost a little "staticy" if that's a real word. Since I don't have heavily mineralized soil, I don't think I will be using it much. I tried it on the Deleon, and same thing. Not my cup of tea. The 5.75" coils works well on both machines, and will see a lot of use in trashy areas.

I'm struggling to make sense of the retune button, and why it does what it does. I've read the manual, and watched the video on youtube, and I do know what it's supposed to do. Just not sure why this is necessary. The audio is so crisp that adding so much functionality specifically to be used for pinpointing seems redundant. I prefer the simplicity of the pinpoint button on the Vaquero.

As for the depth, it's not bad. I dug a few coins in the 6" to 7" range. I don't think worrying about depth on the Outlaw is a valid worry. If you're looking for maximum depth, you better be looking at the Tejon anyway.

The Outlaw will make a good replacement for the Compadre which I sold to my buddy for his daughter to use. I'll let the kids use the Outlaw, as I don't see it as a replacement for the Vaquero (at least not at this point). But before the kids get to it, I'll put a lot more time on it and see if I can start to hear the nuances of the audio.

Hey Dan b,
You had mentioned about the audio tone on the outlaw trying to decipher can slaw coins etc. Just a tip, I noticed the outlaw works similar to the silver umax in regards to try raising the coil on your targets and you can begin to hear the tones break up on trash and coins will just fade out softly. Hope this may help you a bit, I had my outlaw out today with the 7" Widescan and I could tell a good bit of info on the target audio with it, I got my first buffalo nickel 1923 with it and knew it was good before I dug. It was near lots of small iron and brass and it was a solid consistent tone both ways with a slow short sweep. Other targets near by witch included pistol brass and rusty square nails gave a inconsistent duration tone from different directions or a short bleep Tone. Of course I dug them to help me learn or just to prove to myself what it is. The retune button is just another way of putting the detector into no motion all metal or motion fast retune all metal. It does the same thing as the switch however if in no motion all metal it will detune the target to help narrow down the pinpoint. If you use the button to detune the target be sure that you switch to all metal fast or push the retune button with the coil raised in the air before switching back to disc to hunt or you will be running at a reduced signal. Brent.

Gave the Outlaw another run today and I'm starting to hear some differences in the audio. I tried the lifting the coil trick, and I think I'm starting to see what you mean, Brent. The Outlaw seems to love US dimes, and I don't even live in the US (although I do live across from Detroit). At this point I'm not in love with it. It works well, but I don't find it to be outstanding in any single area. The depth is okay, but not H.O.T. deep. Although the audio is fairly smooth on a coin target, it's not as smooth as the Deleon. That's the sweetest audio of all my Tesoros. The pinpoint in VCO mode on the Tejon is superb. The pinpoint on the Outlaw seems like a Rube Goldberg project. A lot of people complain about the touchy GB knob on the Tejon, but I find the GB on the Outlaw needs too much turning for minute changes. The Vaquero GB is perfect.

This is all just my opinion of course, based off of my experiences, and I do need more hours on the Outlaw. So take this for what it's worth.

When you say the Deleon has the nicest sound of all Tesoros does taht go for the Cortes also? I read somewhere that they are the same but the Cortes has more options. Sorry for getting away from the Outlaw, I just got one not to long ago and im still learning it. Im learning lots thanks for the experience to you and everyone else.

Thanks for writing this up.

I think I have to re-hit a few of my early sites as I was not using the retune properly and probably overlooked some targets.. I too will retune with the coil lifted in order to avoid the reduced depth. I then check it with my digger (on the ground) before I pick it up.

I did get the clean sweep coil for mine and have not used the DD since. It has the same heel/toe pinpointing, but does it really nicely.. the depth isn't there (4-5 inches or so..), but in my area the deep stuff is that can/siding slaw you are referring to anyhow.

Have you recovered any Loonies? I have not been able to get used to the sound of these, even close to the surface. I have not found enough toonies to be sure what they come in like yet.

I wish my Cortes experience wasn't back in 2008. It might be easier to compare the Deleon to the Cortes. I've also read that the electronics is basically the same, but I can't say for sure. I seem to recall the Cortes hitting all our Canadian clad at 95. I remember digging if a 95 flashed on the screen a couple times, even if it settled elsewhere. The Deleon seems a little less jumpy, from what I remember. Maybe because the bar graph is divided into less segments?? Anyway, my gut feeling is telling me that there are some differences in the way these two machines behave. All I can tell you with no uncertainty is that the Deleon is a great machine. The screen is useful but it's the audio that is the real treasure (pardon the pun)!

Now back to the Outlaw. I've been aware right from the beginning for the need to retune while the coil is in the air. Not sure I like the fact that I need to do that. My Tejon retunes automatically if I detune with the pinpoint toggle. I like that, even if there is a slight pause while it happens. My experience so far, has me doubting that the Outlaw is the best Tesoro for Canadian coins. It's good with nickles from the 60's and 70's, but I haven't found a single new nickle. I can live with that. I'm finding a lot of 70's and 80's dimes, but nothing new. I've air tested loonies, and they don't sound nice at all. I might be passing these up waiting for a smooth "coin" sound. On US coins, it seems very effective. I've found an unusually high amount of US dimes, considering I'm not in the US. The Outlaw sounds it's best with US coins, from what I can tell so far. Keep in mind, I have a long way to go before anything I ramble on about could be considered conclusive.
