outlaw air test

Boris

New member
Just got a very lightly used outlaw, did an airtest and am slightly disappointed, should l expect to detect a quarter at more than 5 inches?

Boris, try this...

With the mode switch in all metal-motion, turn the machine on. Adjust threshold to low hum. Make sure the machine is clear of anything that is metalish, turn the sensitivity up until you get a chatter, then back off until quiet... Then, turn the GB nob two or three full turns counter clock wise, then turn it clockwise one full turn plus 1/4.

Then put her into disc mode. Turn the disc all the way down and then press the red button all the way in until you hear the threshold reset, then let go.

Now try your air-test.

I had the same experience and when I read the Manuel for start up, realized I was not "centering" the GB, which apparently you need to do for even an air test, then you want to hit the retune just to be sure. It made a difference for me. With the 8" doughnut coil, I can get a silver dime at 7 inches, breaks up at 8. A quarter is about an inch and a half better.

Also, even if the machine is not sounding off on EMI, you will probably get better results outside the house, I know I did.

thank you so much, just added 2 inches to my depth, do you go through this before each use?

You can also fully depress the retune button until you hear the threshold hum while in disc mode. Whenever you fully depress the retune button ensure you're not close to metal otherwise your depth will suffer because you're detuning to the nearby metal.

Well, you kind of do when you ground balance for real.

But you do that on location. Which I guess is why it's called ground balance instead of air balance.
The manual explains the procedure in detail. (If you don't have one, it's free on tesoro's website.)

hihosilver is right, EMI is a silent killer of depth. Most of us don't realize just how 'noisy' our homes are.
(If I'm tuning my Tejon or Troy, I can tell when there's a car coming a block away.)

flysar advice also spot on. The retune button on Outlaw is a kind of funny beast, and can inadvertently kill some depth. Again, the manual has more detail.

Good luck with your new detector,
mike

Hey guys, thanks for all of the information, l will get out much more as soon as it warms up a bit. l live up here in Southwest Michigan and it warms rather late. l am rather anxious to get out again so l may just go out in the same cold that l work in.l am sure the advice will help, thanks again.

I always just stick the coil skywards when I hit the retune button, its an interesting machine, see a lot on the secondary market and I recon its because of the red button , its not scary really & i don't use pin point anyway so only when changing coils etc I need to reset the detector.

shame people don't get to know this detector as its hot on gold.
