Out with new 250

I've been detecting for 3 years now and today I got out for the 1st time with the 250. This is definately a coin killer and when this machine locks on a target, that is exactly what you will pull out of the ground. I seem to have major trouble with the pinpoint feature on this machine so I just reverted back to the X pattern. I tried the suggestions on this forum concerning the pinpoint but just couldn't get it to work properly. Any suggestion??

I'm with you. I too went out for the first time today with my little yeller feller, and had fit's tring to get the pinpoint to work just right.
I have had Garrett products before and have been at this hobby for 30 years, but this wore me out today.
I kept it in all metal most of the time. But, did do some detecting in coin mode.

It's a great machine but the pinpoint is a problem. I have the 4.5 coil coming in a week or so. I 'll try that and if the pinpoint locks on like most of the users here experience, then I'll know I have a faulty larger coil.

Pinpointing with the elliptical coil takes some practice, but you will get it down soon enough. There's a lot of posts on here that will help guide you to success. Some people use the upper tip of the inside coil, (Red Dot Method)dragging back until the signal drops. I find this works OK on shallow coins, at or near the surface. The deeper ones, I "X" them, holding the pinpoint down,(Green Dot Method) and it's in the notch in the center of the coil. Practice on some targets just lying on top of the ground, with you coil near the targets and with your coil raised up higher. Just keep practicing and it will come to you.

Thanks John. I did try on several coins before I took them out of the hole. A few dimes were still sticking in the wall of the hole and they pinpointed at dead center of the inside ring. A few other dimes pinpointed on the outer tip of the coil, whew!!!
I'll keep trying but I am a little disappointed as most of the replies on this machine are so positive on pinpointing. I'm not an expert with a detector but I'm not a novice either but prcatice makes perfect.

Don, Big John is right about the eliptical coil. I had a GTA 1000 a few years ago, and it had an eliptical coil.
I can remember now that I had the worst time trying to pin point with that coil.
I didn't have the web to go and ask questions in those days. I didn't own a computer <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
Don't even know how I got along with out the computer, but I did quite well <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

If you've ever used a DD coil this one pinpoints just like one.

Just scan side to side until you get the strongest signal then drag the coil straight back until the instant the signal quits, then watch the signal intensity and adjust the coil backwards and forwards slightly until all the cursors line up all the way across. The target will be under the center tip of the inside oval on the coil - or close.
Bill

I think that may be some of the problem Bill, I've never used a DD coil before. I'll keep working with it until I get it. Thanks

will seem to 'project' it's signal off-set a little bit, or at least that's how it looks to me. I particularly notice this with the 250 and with the 1500/5x10 Elliptical coil rig.
Once some of the dirt is gone, the pinpoint seems to move back over the actual coin, any one else notice this, or am I deranged?! No, don't answer that!
HH All,

The 250 is an awesome little machine. Have found heaps of pre decimal and $1
and $2 coins here in OZ. The belltone just goes off with our gold coinage, which my
GTAX1000 does not.
I have found the pinpointing just about spot on with the 250. When I find
the target and initially pinpoint it, I release the pinpoint button when it
says I am directly over the target and immediately press it again without
moving the coil. Usually the target is within about half an inch of where
the first pinpoint said it was, and I have just about been able to pop the
coin straight out of the ground using this method about 98% of the time.
Hope this helps?

Strange things happen with different coils. No you aren't deranged. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

You can try detuning over the target to narrow the signal way down.

I use a mxt but iam looking at a 250,what i would do if you have another detector and you know how it pinpoints i would find some coin at different depth but dont dig them up use a bright color golf tee and push it ino the ground even to mark the spot then practice with the 250.I know were the coil on my mxt is centerd for a coin. just and opion.

Getting much better. I've always used a concentric coil and I couldn't grasp the concept of DD /oval coil. Much faster on recovery today and a few times when I pinpointed and pulled the coil back I thought, no way that target can be under there but sure enough it was. Great coin shooter!!!!!
Thanks for all the tips all.
