Out Slot - Screwdriver Coin Pop'n Today :detecting:

Looks like some of the school sports fields are starting to soften up a little. I could push my screwdriver down to about 3 inches before I hit frost. And that is definetly acceptable for coin pop'n. All one needs, is an electronic pin-pointer, a screwdriver and the right machine/coil for the job. Using this method allows one to get those targets out of the ground real fast without digging any holes, and that keeps sports fields open to detectorists. No rings today, but I have all year to get them. :beers:

John, this is probably a tired topic but I have a question for you. How do you successfully pop coins with a screw driver? Is there any good videos to show how? I tried many times last summer an only made a big mess. I use an AT-PRO so i find many targets but end up digging a hole. Mind you I'm very good at digging and usually no trace is left but i avoid sports fields due to the chance I may leave an unsightly spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too would like to see this done. Not 10 min ago I PM'ed someone about this very thing. I would love to watch how you guys do this.
Thanks.
Ken.

By far and away the best method of retrieving clad coins is the screwdriver method. Most clad hunts I don't take any other tool, it's not invasive at all and won't get you in trouble with city workers and citizens that see you out digging. I can't believe how bad some peoples "plugs" are. Damage caused by digging huge holes is the single biggest threat to the hobby. A pinpoint probe and a flat screwdriver are your best friend, best way to learn is to leave the digger at home and practise with the screwdriver. Since "popping" coins with a screwdriver is so much faster, you're clad coin count will increase by way more than you think!

You are so right! I have seen holes 8 inches in diameter, 1" deep to retrieve what was probably a common coin. And that plug dies....and we get the blame.I figure using the screwdriver as both a probe and retrieving tool can easily increase your coin and ring finds by 30%.

Trying not to be too dense here, but are you saying that you dont even use your regular metal detector? Didnt think a pinpoint probe would go much more than 1/2".

I hope those looking at this post, in particular my above question, understand I was being completely serious. I know that may make me look kinda dumb, but I'm still in learning mode, especially with this way of coin hunting. Help me better understand the what and how. Thanks.
Ken.

The coinage is starting to add up in the piggy bank! Congrats on a successful hunt!

Ok, to answer your question AND mine AND others I'm sure, I searched and found a few....

Thanks for the video links they were very helpful. Though i found it most interesting that the guy from the middle vid seemed to cause the most damage popping his coin, in the end his repairs looked the best. Is that normal, to "pop" so much of a clump when doing it?

Hey Mudd, you really dont have to pry like that video shows, just stab the coin, work out a little hole over the top of it by pushing and pulling on the screwdriver side to side, then slide your finger down into the hole along side the screwdriver, tip the coin on edge, and pull it out between your finger and the screwdriver...its way much faster than the videos show...like 10 seconds from hitting the target with the metal detector, to coin in pouch. I dont carry a trowel or a pinpointer, and believe me its the fastest way to get coins/targets in the 3" on up depth in most soils.
Mud

Awesome thanks Mud! Now if i can ust get the pinpointing down with my machine I'll really be in business lol ..seriously though sometimes it seems like right at the front of the ring and other times it seems to be the front of the cross section in the ring. I'll get it one day.
