Out on a Mission

Decided that I had to hit 2000 clad coins for the year and then get caught up on all the stuff I've been neglecting for 2 weeks. I figured a short hunt this morning and a short hunt tomorrow would do it but I got it done this morning. All bark chip areas and the ground surrounding. Cleaned out the main areas with the stock coil first and then installed my new sniper coil to get in close. If you don't hunt bark chip areas this way you must start. At least 2/3 of the coins were found where my stock coil would not function even with very low sensitivity. One of the sites has no metal so it was all stock. Only found about 10 coins there.

Noteworthy stuff is Belgian 5 Franc coin, junk earring, turtle pendant, "S" pendant or charm with "diamonds," Stop pin. I didn't stop by the way. 110 coins in about 4.5 hours. Had to drive between 3 sites so maybe 4 hours actual hunting.

When I'm wrong, I'm wrong and boy was I wrong about not using rechargeables. I bought 12 brand new AAs for my camera and GTI 2500 and they are all still going strong on their first charge. In fact, my 2500 had 16 hours of use before it even started flickering into 4 bars. This normally happened around 13 or 14 hours with regular batteries. If you can answer either of these questions please do. Why does the battery setting on the 2500 call rechargeables NiCads? Most do not use this technology anymore. Does this cause any problem? Which setting do you use? I know older rechargeables had a memory effect problem that newer rechargeables are supposed to not have. When do you recharge your batteries? I was thinking at about 3 bars on the battery meter.

I have also found about 25 Pepsi and Coke caps with codes on them this year. I hope you all are taking advantage of this promotion. I made mention of this before and do so again. I think you need 90 points from Pepsi to get a dvd. Each cap is 1 point. A 12 pack is more points etc. I got a bunch of stuff from Coke last year. Shorts, flip flops, free 12 packs. It's worth the time. If you're not doing it, or you don't drink pop, you can email the codes to me. Heh heh.

No hunting until next Thursday. Maybe......

For those that read this far I'll explain the Walking Liberty Half on the hood of the car. I stopped for coffee at a gas station and the Indian or Pakistani asked if I would take a half dollar in change. I said sure and the guy was actually happy to get rid of a nice 1944D WL Half! Trying to sound as unexcited as possible, I asked where he got it and if he had anymore. He said this guy came in and paid all in change for a 24 oz can of beer including this half and that at least 5 people had already refused to take it in change. I asked if I could look at the rest of his change and he said no but he did place all of his quarters on the counter and there were no silvers. This was at 8am. I guess when you need a beer, you need a beer.

Boy Chris,
That's a good haul for the time spent.
You must start going to the paki shop more often with $20 bills for a 50 cent buy.
You could finish up quids in. (slang for pounds)
:hot:

That's pretty funny and I didn't even think of it like that which is how my mind works. That poor slob had roughly 6 bucks worth of silver. Had I met him in the parking lot I might have given him 5 bucks for it. I didn't even really need the coffee either, I mostly wanted to use the restroom.

I knew quid was slang for pound but "quids in" is new to me. Could you explain how it might be used it in a conversation?

Over here about 90 percent of the gas stations are run buy Pakistanis or Indians (at least where I am.) I actually have a few of them saving interesting coins and bills for me. They really hate getting a coin or a bill that they can't put in their register. I get a lot of our half dollar and small dollar coins (nothing special rarity wise) and every once in a while an old silver coin or Ike dollar. We also have 2 dollar bills that many won't take because they think they're fake. I had never been in this place until today but I'll drop in next time I hunt that field and see if he's come across anything interesting.

I had this Mexican woman who does fluff and fold at a nearby laudramat saving silver quarters for me. I was paying her $5.00 for 4 which was lower than they were worth at the time but more than the local pawn shop would have given her. I found out somebody was giving her 2 bucks a piece for them just a few weeks ago.

Cheers!

Chris

You're right, NiMH batteries do not have the memory effect that NiCads did. One interesting thing about NiMH batteries is that early in their life, the available power will increase after several charge-discharge cycles, so the lengthy runs you're getting now will get longer after a few cycles.

With NiMH batteries, you'll want to bring along some backup batteries. This is because NiMH batteries hold pretty steady at 1.2 volts as they discharge, then they discharge very quickly when they are running out of juice. I have two sets of batteries for my machines so I can keep a fresh set ready to go at all times.

As far as when to recharge NiMH batteries, any time is fine, but I'd recommend letting them discharged completely in the machine while they are still fairly new, at least for the first 5-7 cycles. That will get them up to their full potential quickly. Since I have a spare set, I let mine discharge completely every time.

I hope this helps!

Very nice hunt indeed! You sure are rolling in the good finds. Run your rechargeables under the NICAD setting, otherwise the battery icon will show one less bar after about an hours worth of hunting.

That is a good haul! The hood ornament rocks
