Out of the field and into the school

I went to a couple schools (about 5 hrs total) this weekend looking for deep silver. Of course if I get a surface 180, I will retrieve it because it could be a silver ring, but I mostly was seeking those deeper targets. Since putting the meter on my Sovereign its been really fun to search for specific conductors, but I also found out how much is missed by not digging the tab and zinc signals. When testing the reliability of the numbers (like a compass its hard to trust at first). So I dug a lot of targets that were zinc and tab. To my chagrin, some of those targets (165-175 range) were coin spills with nickles or zinc pennies mixed in. I did manage to squeeze a couple mercs and wheats. One is a 1913s but well worn. They seem to be fetching $10 and up on ebay. I did dig tabs, faygo caps and foil. I was surprised that Faygo caps come in at about 179. I will dig them until I feel comfortable passing them up. Still learning and testing this wonderful machine. The extras in the pic are all copper or brass.

I have bruises all over my but from kicking myself for not getting a Sov. sooner.

Nice finds old silver is always a welcome site:thumbup: ,i collect clad now for 4 years i have a 2lb coffee can just about over flowing i have no clue how much ? i been hunting with the Sov.GT since 2010 at the 3 high schools out here all built in the mid 1850,s the first 2 years was with my DFX which i still use ,i find more older coins deeper with the GT LC,s and seated dimes and quarters the clad here is endless!!! 47 years of kids losing it in the huge sports fields one day i will clean and count it :detecting: Jim

Good job. Still waiting on my first silver of the year. Surprised you are running into tabs that read that high. I did extensive testing of a large pool of found tabs and the highest they rang was 169 on the meter. You can dig up a large thread called "Splitting Hairs" I did on a study of this large pool of tabs compared to a few hundred gold rings a friend found with his Excaliber water hunting, digging everything above iron so the test pool isn't biased. What I found was that if I raised the notch just high enough to block out a 165 tab, I could eliminate about 84% of all pull tabs while still recovering the vast majority of gold rings. Nickles will also still sound off with it set that way. I did some charts and graphs in that thread to illistrate things.

The other day I headed to a playground with pea gravel as it's a quick and fast way to rack up my clad totals. Somebody must have hit the place because there were just about zero signals this time. I usually hit it a few times a year.

Two mercs that good , WOW you do have a good spot keep the preasure on . you will take the city renew the siege

Here's that thread I put together on the gold ring/tabs statistical data. Some of my best work...

Ism,

Nice hunt! Yep, silver is always welcome and clad like deepdiger mentions, does add up over time.

Critter, the pull tabs come in a lot lower. I have had a couple high ones but they are a specific style/alloy. I had trouble with them when using audio only. They wont even disc out. I originally thought there was something wrong with my detector disc but soon found different. This week is spring break...I forgot today, but tomorrow I will hit the school turf again and see if I can turn some more silver. Still looking for my first old quarter...I have a couple Washington's but nothing like a seated or standing.
