Our County just put a metal detecting policy in place....

Jim C (Mich)

Well-known member
....never had any restrictions before.
What do you guys think of it?

Metal Detector Policy
Metal detectors will be allowed in general public areas with permission from the Parks Supervisor.
No person shall destroy or remove any historical or pre-historical ruin or parts thereof, or any object of antiquity without the permission of the Parks Director.
Metal Detectors are NOT allowed in the following areas at any time:
Camping areas;
Golf courses and driving range areas;
Cascades Manor House grounds; and,
Cascades Falls fenced in area.
Further, metal detectors are NOT allowed at any time during the staging time of any special events in any County Park.
The use of metal detectors in the water is under the direction of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Enforcement and Fines
A person violating any provision of the above terms shall be guilty of a misdemeanor upon issue of a ticket, and shall be subject to immediate expulsion from Commission property, and shall be banned from entrance upon Commission property for a period of time not to exceed one (1) year, at the discretion of the Parks Director.

you you can't dig deeper then 4 inch's, plus any coins you find along with other stuff will have to be ok'd before you take them home, just get the permit and keep the good stuff in your back pocket :thumbup:

I bet the Parks Director came across dead brown plugs from somebody else hunting those parks plus they probably left their trash laying next to the hole.

That part about no person shall destroy or remove any historical or pre-historical ruin or parts thereof could get tricky, that could cover alot of things like coins also, good luck Jim :thumbup:

I stayed away from the Manor House while I was there, and never tried to get onto the golf course, or into the Falls itself. Kind of makes me wonder if some ignoramous tried doing that? All those areas are really close together. Whenever the CW Re-enactment came through, I left the detector in the trunk.

Are there any other "functions" that go on at the other county parks?

Does that put all of Swain's Lake CP off-limits, or just the camping areas? I pulled A BUNCH of old coins out of the grassy area next to the beach.

Thats what I was thinking. Some goofball probably detecting while the civil war muster was going on.

You left just in time Allen. Stupid rules. I don't hit parks much around here but when things are slow and no where else to go I like hitting em. Now I have to ask permission. Hate it.

We need to go to the park office only in State parks here in NJ. You fill out a quicky form with your name and date and off you go. No problem, no questions, no hassles. It most likely helps the hobby since the jerk who digs and leaves a mess will think twice or go to a town park instead.

in the woods at Sharp Park. Not a lot of coins out there, but the ones that are, are usually old. The rest of the time I spent at some schools.

There was one time, I think early in the Spring of last year, that Laurie and I went over to Little Wolf Lake CP, and I was hunting around looking for some older coins. We had been there maybe 20 minutes, when a township cop drove up, turned around, looked at me for about a minute, then drove off. I figure one of the residents called the cops, thinking I was vandalizing the place. Go figure.....

I got out for the first time in a couple months yesterday. It was a spot that used to have homes dating back to about 1900. The houses were demolished and/or burned sometime; I'm not sure when. All that's left now are one street, sidewalks, and a bit of foundation here and there. The city's been clearing out the scrub trees and undergrowth, as it's a haven for the homeless in the summer.

All I managed to find was one modern penny, a junk-metal crucifix, and some melted metal. If they scrape it, I'll probably find a bunch of marbles. I did see signs that someone else is hunting there, and possibly sifting. I also saw signs of a bottle dump, with broken surface glass from older bottles here and there.

There's a park here you would probably like to explore. It's BIGGER than Sharp, has a lot of woods, and a ghost town in there somewhere.
