OT: Anybody from NY?

Completely off-topic, but wanted to pick your brains. Our son's baseball team will be playing in Cooperstown,NY for a week in June. We are interested in visiting NYC after the tournament is over, but am unsure of what area to stay in and transportation into the city, etc. If anybody can provide any advice on seeing the the city for a couple of days on a budget and two children (12 and 9)...sorry for the rambling question, but any advice would be appreciated. We're from a small town in SC...so, not so familiar on getting around the big city.

Sorry, I don't know much about the big city & how to get around. I've always wanted to go into the Statue of Liberty & Empire state build. myself. So, hopefully a local will chime in. Not trying to steer you away from the city, but I can let you know about some cool stuff I love to do up around Cooperstown. The Herkimer Diamond mines are a great time & not far....(I wrote a story for W&E that should be out soon hopefully).
Howe's Caverns is very cool too, but not sure if that's too far away for ya?...
My brothers team (coached by my dad) played on that field too, & that must be real thrill. Cooperstown is a great little village, & the hall of fame is awesome.
I'm 4 hr's away, and I'm much more familiar with that upstate area rather than the city, and love hitting Cooperstown, Herkimer, & Howes caves all in one road trip....
HH,

But I'm staying in the dorms with the boys and it's a 25 hour a day job.
