Original Sovereign Coil Replacement

drbacklash

New member
I got into metal detecting a few years ago and purchased an original Sovereign with a Sun ray DTI II. I used it for a while then put it aside for a couple of years. Now I'm ready to go again and was wondering if I should replace the original coil with something better/larger. The original is white and I guess about 8". I use it mainly on the beach and it has done a good job there but I wonder if I'm missing things a different coil would find. I am looking at the 10 X 12 SEF butterfly coil but I don't know how it does in the ocean environment. Are there any other coils, maybe used ones, that I should consider?

Many thanks.

If you are new to the Sovereign the coil you have is a 8 inch coinsearch and the best to learn the Sovereign with. It is rain proof, but not waterproof so you cant stick it in water. Now if you know the Sovereign and the area isn't not full of trash you can try a bigger coil and the ones I would try are the proven ones like the Sun Ray S-12 Intruder, the Minelab 10 inch Tornado coil and some really like the 15 inch WOT coil, but for me that one is too big.
With the Sovereign to really do well with it you have to know it well and go slow to see some great depth, the 8 inch coil you have which should be the coinsearch has got me coins over 12 inches deep, but only after I learned it well and went very slow.

I'm not really "new" to the Sovereign, I'm just picking it up again after several years of non use. I have the original coinsearch coil and I have found many beach coins left by others detectors. The area I search gets a lot of activity both by people and by other MDers so I was trying to improve my chances of going deeper and wider with a new coil to try to find things even I had missed with the coinsearch coil. I didn't realize that the coinsearch wasn't waterproof. I sure have had it in a bunch of saltwater with no problems (that I know of). I looked at the Sun Ray S-12 and I'm sort of leaning that way right now.

I don't think I'm man enough to swing an 18x15 coil for more than 30 minutes. It would take all the money I found to buy a gym membership. Actually, I would like to find a detector that swings itself and digs its own holes. I would pay up to $200 for one of those. $300 if it would also drive to the beach and back.
