Original Silver Sabre

I have what I believe to be an early model, possibly the first run of the Silver Sabre. Serial # is 3A 7566.
Where could I find an original manual?
It looks like it has a solid 7" coil and has printed on it "Concentric Discriminator" and the Tesoro logo.
I found that the speaker wasn't working but the headphone jack is. Found several old metal pieces around an old tree in the back yard...looked sorta like cast iron pieces off a tractor.
Just trying to find out more info about this model and approximately how old and if it is any good. It has 2 dials, 1 is for Disc level and the other is sensitivity, also there is a toggle switch for Discrim or all met.
Any help is appreciated. I'm new to this.
Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris I'm sure someone on this forum could rustle up a manual for the SS1. If it's anything like the SS2, then it will be a great machine! if you're new to the hobby check this out ... get yourself a little old iron nail, and 'see' if you can hear it through your headphones. You might not, as the sabre should 'discriminate it out', at most you might hear a scratchy sort of audio response. Now try the same thing with one of those big pieces of iron you found by the tree. This might give you what sounds like a good audio response, so try just sweeping the coil just near to the edge of the big piece, this should give you a 'scratchy' audio! now compare the sounds you've just heard to a coin... this should sound really good! and give you a consitent audio response from any direction. Get lots of different metal things, and try them one at a time, to 'see' what they sound like! it takes a while to learn the sounds of good/bad targets, but it will pay off!
Good hunting Chris! and feel free to come and ask for help here anytime you need it. Don't forget to post pictures of your finds for us to see

Hi Chris, Charlie gave you some good advice there. I gathered up several targets like the nail he recommended and played with them and the disc dial on my first machine. It helped me figure out a bit of what levels the disc worked at on targets i might find.
I've never seen an old silver saber, any chance you could post a picture?
HH and hope you get lots of fun finds with it.

The standard coil was the 7" concentric and that was an excellent match for this model and the intended applications for it.
Contact your local Dealer, a Tesoro Distributor, or Tesoro directly regarding an Owner's Manual..
The Silver Sabre is a motion discriminate based model and in the DISC. mode you'll have a fairly high discriminate setting at minimum. More than enough to reject most surface & shallow iron nails and some small foil type targets. In the ALL METAL mode it is essentially a motion discriminate mode with only enough 'rejection' to deal with the ground signal and respond to almost any metal target you encounter, to include iron targets.
Hunting older sites for older coins and neat artifacts? Just set the discriminate level at minimum, set the sensitivity as high as it will go w/o chatter, then go hunting! If it beeps, recover the target and determine if it's good or bad.
The Silver Sabre was probably the first model that really "caught on" and brought Tesoro to the forefront in the detecting industry! It was a great value with surprising performance for the dollar invested.

Yep ... I remember well the first machine I got (SS2) and my first few trips out with it. Man, I was digging anything that made a noise! took me quite some time to figure out the subtle differences in target audio response! but hey, surely that's the best way to learn your machine .. 'Trial and error'. If you end up digging some iron, SO WHAT? I found a neat 300 year old iron key that way. As we say over here in the UK .. 'If in doubt, dig it out'! HH charlie(UK)

Chris,
I don't have a picture of the SS, but I do have the second one off the line that I did a field test on back in 1983 I believe. It is still working well with no repairs since new.
Your non-working speaker is either the HP jack not making contact when plug is removed, a broken wire or open speaker.
Tesoro can probably supply a user manual.
Hope this helps.

Retro-fit back to those 2-piece designs ! Those were the days.......

While the newer 3-piece rods are good and do make for packaging in smaller boxes, the earlier 2-piece rods were not prone to the 'squeak' as you mentioned.
Often they were not punched very true, and that bothered me a bit to have a rod and coil, or even control housing or stand, out of alignment, but with today's improved QC and production, I don't think that would happen like it did then.
The 2-piece rod system is one of the reason why I like the 'original' Bandido and Pantera models.
