Ordered the 15x12 S.E.F. Butterfuly Coil

Gotta new toy coming. Took the big plunge today and ordered the 15x12 s.e.f. butterfly coil. I should have it by the weekend. Can't wait to try that bad boy out! :detecting:

Holy smokes that's a big 'un! Curious to see how it works for you. Even more curious if it turns up anything at that park we discussed a while back and I checked out. If you turn up more oldies at that site with the new coil, that'll be the "proof in the pudding" for me. Better get a bigger shovel too. ;-)

Alright!Look forward to your results Dan.I hope it works out as well for you as it did me.Im sure it will :) You will cover more ground thats for sure.HH

Nick, I call that place "Barber" park. It is definitely one of the sites where I want to try that 15x12 coil out. I also want to see if it opens up sites that haven't produced much lately. If you want to see a big coil get the deep coins, just watch Niagra's youtube videos. He coinshoots with the big 18x15 sef coil on his E-trac. It's pretty impressive.

You won't be needing to lift weights anymore when you get it. It's a monster.
Good Luck.

One of the best things about this new 15x12 coil is that it really didn't cost me anything. I restored an old ERIE #12 cast iron skillet by cleaning the carbon buildup and rust off in an electrolysis tank I built in the garage. Then I seasoned it with canola oil and, boy-o-boy, it came out looking very nice. These old skillets are highly collectible - especially the big ones. I put it up for auction on Ebay and it sold for $280. I made over $200 on that piece and that money paid for the coil I ordered today. So I'm very happy about that! :bouncy: Next on my list of things to buy is the 10x12 s.e.f. If it performs like I think it will, then it will replace my Pro coil.

Im gonna Keep my Eyes open for those skillets Dan..If i come across any I may need some advice of the proccess to clean them up.I saw that one you did..It looked like brand New.Ill be grabing that 10x12 myself :) HH

If the weight becomes an issue, it's easlily solveable by getting a Swingy Thingy. I can use mine for hours if I have it hooked to the ST. I'm no spring chicken either. Jim

I'm glad you mentioned the Swingy Thingy. I've been thinking about getting one. Glad to hear it works. Can you easily take your detector off of it and set it down to dig a target? I guess I'm wondering if it gets in the way.

I have one dan...It can get in the way..But i just unhook it before i dig the target..Its worth it if the arms sore ill tell ya that..Theres days my elbow feels like its gonna snap off one more swing.(youd think id just take a break!).But this addiction i have to see whats in the next hole keeps me swinging :)

Dan I bought one from Sharpshooter and I really like it you can cover the ground and dig the stuff, but you better get a longer handle on your digger....:lmfao:

My elbow hurts too after a day of swinging the coil...and I've got tendonitis that would probably go away if I laid off detecting for a month. But I just can't do that. It is an addicition. :drinking: Got to see what's in the next hole. :pulltab:

Because my arm was aching at work today  I went ahead and ordered a Swingy Thingy. I think I'll need it with the big coil until my arm heals. Thanks for mentioning that thing, Fellas!

On the Swingy Thingy...Where you have it connected to your chest, it can vary depending on how you have the strap adjusted, will make swinging it more difficult if it's too low. Also the length of the bungee cord is critical. Sometimes I feel myself straining and if I shorten the length of the cord, with that quick adjuster, just a half inch, it makes a big difference. Don't hook the clip that goes to your rear pocket to your belt. It seems like it'd be no big thing, but your tool belt will ride up where as your pants, if you hook it to the waist band of your jeans, can only go so high without getting a major wedgy.
Going up hill the bungee needs to be a little shorter and going down hill it needs to be a little longer. Think of a huge load being suspended by a crane and you manuever it with a tag line to get it exaclty where you want it. The Swingy Thingy is the crane and you arm is the tag line just guiding the coil where it needs to go.
I don't know what I have done differently, but I hook mine in and when I dig a target the E-Trac stays connected and is not in the way. I even use the X-1 and the ST doesn't interfere. I kind of like it when standing as I can look around and stretch and the unit just hangs there waiting for direction. Makes it much easier to pick your nose. NO I Didn't say that did I? Jim

I put the new 15x12 on my E-trac, did a master reset and headed out back to my test garden - a clad Rosie buried 8" and a silver Jefferson buried 5". A storm front passed over Ohio and it had been raining for a few hours. It was still sprinkling and the ground was saturated with rain water. In auto +3 I passed the coil over the nickel and couldn't get a signal...well, I got a nickel peep every 3rd, 4th or 5th swing. Nothing repeatable from any direction. Bummer. I then passed the coil over the dime. I got no signal. :surprised: I kept swinging the coil back and forth from several directions and could get nothing solid and repeatable - only a few very iffy peeps. In a real world hunt I wouldn't stop and dig. I then put the Pro coil back on. I got a solid, repeatable signal on the nickel. :clapping: I got a much better signal on the clad dime but it was iffy. I put the detector in manual 22 and then got a good repeatable signal - one I would definitely dig. :detecting: The dime and nickel have only been in the ground for 4 months. I don't know how much that makes a difference in how strong a signal should be. I'm referring to the halo effect. Probably not much of one on these two coins.

When I still had the 15x12 on my detector, I worked the backyard (away from the test garden) for a few minutes and got quite a few solid, repeatable signals. I didn't dig any but just wanted to see if I got any strong signals. I got some. I'm not giving up on the big 15x12 but I'm not feeling as optimistic as I was when I was waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I'll reserve judgement until I take it to a few sites that haven't given up much to me lately. If I get some good signals and coins the Pro coil could not get, I'll be satisfied.

Hmm..I find that rather strange dan..My sef air test deeper and deff is deeper in ground Test..Is there EMI in the area? Being that large, running it near the house may not work well..I cant use mine very well in my lawn..With over head wires in 1 spot,Underground dog fence around my yard,It goes nuts.an air test should give you an idea till you get to a good area for a real run..Let me know how you make out..Im gonna try My new pattern with my Big coil tommrow.Good Luck.

Hey Dan,
I recall when LA Digger got his 15x12 for his Explorer, he mentioned it was necessary to do a hard reset. Check out his 15x12 introductory videos starting from May 29th. You might try that and see if it helps.

About a quarter mile down the road is a huge radio tower that transmits a local radio station. That could be the problem. Because of that tower many other radio stations are drowned out. That could be affecting the coils. My Pro coil does seem to work better in other locations. Because the 15x12 is bigger...maybe it is affected more. Don't know. I'll try to take the big coil out hunting today and see how it does elsewhere.

I went to a place I have pounded over and over looking for silver. My Pro coil got me 3 silver coins from this place. They were all 5 to 7 inches deep. I wanted to see if the 15x12 could get more. It didn't. That baby goes deep though! The big coil ran stable in manual 24 and auto +3 sensitivity and it pinpointed accurately. However one time it was off by about 4 inches. The target was a clad quarter that I think was on edge. For a big coil it did an excellent job separating targets. I think this would be a great coil for places you've hunted to death with the Pro coil. I believe it would have found deep silver if there was any there.

Here are some highlights from todays hunt:
