Orchard hunting

Never did. To make it worthwhile something would have had to happen in that orchard, a gathering of people or a battle fought. None of the orchards around here fit that criteria. But hey, maybe I missed out on something good. Wouldn't be the first time.

You could try it and report back to us.

Done them a lot and always did OK. Ones close to houses have turned up stuff from rolls of wheat cents, toys, pocket watches and a couple silver dollars through the years.

sweet there are tons of those types of orchards around here i want to do but will have to wait till the undergrowth dies off.

One would think tree roots would be a problem and of course one would have to be careful lest he damage a fruit bearing tree...If they were orchards where people picked their own for years imagine they would produce and if the owner sold from a roadside stand sure would be a good area. Many orchards only workers were in them so imagine they didn't have a lot to lose...

Sounds like a good idea. Wherever you have people picking fruit like
migrant workers, your bound to find something. Never thought about doing
orchards before.

Some orchards are OLD. Don't go in with preconceptions as to what you'll find. (You could loose the edge.) Don't forget "The Rule".....Few people over a long period of time/large groups in a short period. Scott

Got to remember though apple orchards or for that matter other types produce areas weren't alwas what they were, who knows what might have been there before what it is now.Do some detective work i:e library, internet, etc.it might be worth your while to do old orchards and such.I use to work in apple orchards when I was younger, and was thinking the other day I would love to metal detect the one I use to work in.Its abandoned now,its in New York State in Dutchess County,in Lagrangeville..If anybody is near there it is prime pickens for sure.

wow thanks fo the response i thought of this based on the fact that if a tree can beer fruit for years there must have been more trees before them that may have been there im sure it take many years for one tree to grow fruit. the places i live around had areas for the migrant workers to live in, it was so big. the only thing im worried about is digging bullet cases this could be the only problem since this area was an old hunting area for decades. But on the positive side where there was hunters there was the guy who may have pulled something out of his pocket and dropped a coin or two when he did so. well we will see. this is the time of year i like to find back up sites to hit. i break my detecting into two seasons summer/fall summer is the less accessable, winter you can pretty much go anyplace no weeds to deal with i guess i should call it my summer/ winter range.
