Optional coils for the Cibola

Neil

Well-known member
Does anyone use one of the DD coils made for the Cibola as their main coil or even occasionally?

Does the detector have to be sent in to be tuned to the DD coil or will they work ok without doing that.

Any input on how they work on the Cibola would be appreciated.

Also, comparing the Cibola to the Vaquero, same detector except the GB and locked in all metal mode on the V? I mean sensitivity and depth are the same?

Thanks much,
Neil

Hi Neil,

If you put a different coil on a factory preset ground balnced machine, Tesoro will tell you to send them in to have the coil tuned to the detector. Will your machine still work? Yes. You can still hunt with it but it may not be tuned to the "optimimum" operating conditions. It could be right on, or maybe a little off but its really hard to say how much depth loss you might experience if you dont get it tuned. With a manually GB'd machine, like the Vaquero, you dont have to worry about that.

Just to clarify, you dont need to send the machine in because you want to add a DD coil to your Cibola. You should get it tuned if you change to ANY new coil. Tesoro will also tell you that if you have two coils that you always use on your machine, send them both in and they set the machine to run at optimum with both coils. There is no charge, they do this for free, you need only pay postage to get your machine to the factory in Arizona.

The DD coils dont give you an better depth or performance UNLESS you are hunting in mineralized soil. They are designed to "see through" mineralization but in normal soil you really dont have any advantage with them.

I use the 5.75 widescan dd on my Cibola and it works great!!!! In fact, it never comes off the machine. I love how it can pick through garbage and pinpoint right on to find the smallest stuff. I have not noticed any loss of depth or performance on mine.

Good luck

Greg

What about hunting in trash? It seems like the DD would be better due to the fact that it's only hot down the center.

Are we talking about the same machine basically, I mean sensitivity wise?

As far as the DD coils go, I was mostly looking for info on the larger DD coils for beach hunting, coverage being most important and depth second.

Thanks much,
Neil

Because of the "band" of magnetic field running the length of the coil, you get good coverage but you also can get "multiple" targets under the coil in that long band. A concentric coil has a magnetic pattern being more of a cone-shaped field, so its a bit easier to zero in on the deeper targets without overlapping any other targets (deep targets that is). Granted, you have to overlap your sweeps a lot more, but in really trashy areas, if you slow down and really cover the area, you can pull some more goodies from the ground.

and that is the GB feature on the Vaquero. In nuetral ground they should be pretty equal but you gain an advantage with the V in two ways. One is, it allows you to change coils with no worry needing to have your machine tuned to the coil, and two, you have the abiltiy to adjust your machine to compensate for any ground conditions. The Cibola is factory preset GB so in bad soil you could lose some depth.
