Opinons wanted on Fisher line

I am a Whites MXT user of about 4 years. My main interest is hunting parks and schools for clad and jewelry. I would also like to be confident in hitting the rare older silver that is masked by other junk.

I was thinking of getting a used machine to experiment with, and had been looking at the ID Edge and Excell. Are they basically the same machine, what coil is stock, and how do they handle in the trash? Are there smaller coils readilly available?

What about the Coinstrike? How does it do whth small jewelry, and what about the coil situation? I believe there is also a CZ-3?

Some of you that have grown up with Fisher may like to rate the good and bad about these different machines. Perhaps there are some models I have overlooked. If so, I would certainly like to follow along. Another concern is reliability. Are there any models to stay away from?

Any discussion would be much appreciated!

Here are my opinions starting with the Coinstrike.

The C$ is very hot on stuff in the foil range so jewelry is no problem. Despite its sensitivity to low conductors it will see-thru modern trash to those older deeper coins. Not many of the newer high freq all-pupose machines can do that part well. The C$ and MXT came out within a few weeks of each other and we did many comparisons in parks and the C$ won almost every time when it came to reporting the deeper coins with proper target ID. Many coins that had to be hit from just the right angle of approach to indicate properly on the MXT gave solid lock ons from all angles with the C$. No bull, just fact.

The Edge, what can I say. I thnk every one in the country knows this is my favorite Fisher for all around useage. Whats not to like about the Edge? The audio is nearly perfect with well defined tones and quick accurate responses. The sounds are modulated just enough to let you know you are over a deeper target without having to pinpoint. It handles uneven ground (freshly plowed fields) as good as anything out there and like the C$ it is just as hot on small low conductors as it is high coins. Coins on edge?.. no problem! coins near iron,,again no problem. When I hunt older sites I usually prefer a single tone beep-dig machine at low iron disc settings. The Edge is one of a very few multi tone machines I feel confident with in that same scenerio. I have not spent much time in parks with the Edge but, as good as it performs everywhere else I gotta think it would be a good choice. Its light and well balanced while in use. Some machines feel well balanced when you pick them up but get a little clunky when actually swinging them, the Edge doesn't.

The Excel also makes a very good park hunter. For the price its very good. In parks where you can keep the coil close to the ground it has decent depth. Not so good for field use in uneven ground or stubble where you cannot keep the coil close to the ground.

Like Jackpine the EDGE is my favorite detector. I like it so much I have two. I think Texas will drop the COIN-STRIKE and EDGE and in case they do I will be covered.

I started out with a 1212 then to a CZ-6 then the excel and now the edge i am doing very well with it here i would never sell it i have posted a few finds on here some think the edge is old now so i don't post any more.sense the new f 75 came out Happy Hunting if you bye a edge you wont be sorry Jeff

From what you all say, the Edge is definitely worth a second look. Is it programmable, and take a while to get the hang of?

What do you percieve to be things it doesn't do the best? For instance, is it shaky on gold rings and nickels? Does it require a slow sweep speed? Are there any coils available, and what are some of your favorites?

Sounds like a decent machine. I an also pondering the Minelab X-70. Any of you use one of those alongside the Edge?

heres my take on the edge... I use it in the parks, schools, old home sites,in the water as a wading detector(where it hits very well on small gold as well as silver) i have a whites and theres no way I'LL go back to it i can swing the edge all day and not get tired and have a nice heavy pouch full of coins, rings ect.... and have the battery power left over to do it again and again......Great machine
