Opinions on which Whites and is this a good price??

In case you've seen this, I also posted this in another forum I use. I've been looking out for a good deal on a used whites dfx, xlt or mxt pro for coin shooting, relic hunting and occaisional beach hunting. I have a compadre but find I dig a lot of trash with it, more than I want to, so I wanted one of these whites machines to help me in my decision making process in to dig or not to dig. I am also hoping the amount of good finds will go up quite a bit with one of these.

In a town not too far away I found a used Whites DFX for sale in a pawn shop. Its a DFX spectra e series with a 4" sniper coil. It only has the drop in battery pack, not the rechargeable one, no manual, charger etc... It is in very good shape, hard to find a scratch on it anywhere so not very much use at all. They were asking $600 for the machine as is but they accepted my offer of $400 if I want it. Is $400 a good deal for a used dfx? I think it is but want ya'lls opinion on it.

Any opinions on my choices of detector upgrade or the price for the dfx? Thanks all!

I think $400 is a good price for a really clean DFX. You'll want to get a larger coil for it to hunt the beach but the Shooter coil works well in trashy parks.

400 is a great price,I think you will need to buy the eclipse 950 coil to cover more ground and to get more depth, right now the dfx goes for over 500 on up on the auction site.but in my honest opinion the dfx is not my favorite whites detector to use....

I would have to agree that $400 is fair for what you are getting and also have to agree that the 950 is the coil to get for it.

thats what i paid for mine last week and felt i got a great deal
With the 950 coil charger and both batt. Packs n charger

Thanks for the opinions everyone; I like the deal that you got for yours 798hand!! I honestly wanted the mxt pro but at this time I have not found a decent one for $400, looks like most people are hanging onto them or if they are selling, they are real proud of them. I'll kick it around a bit after I check the machine out to see that everything is working on it. I just hate to "settle" for something else at a really great deal when what I really want may show up on the classifieds a week later.

If you really want an MXT, that is what I would get, or in your case wait for. I wouldn't settle for something else or you would eventually regret it. The MXT is a GREAT easy to learn detector and the DFX has quite a learning curve to it. The DFX plus a new coil will cost you over $500 and you should be able to find a MXT for that.

The DFX is a great detector and my personal choice. $400 is a good price, but it should come with the rechargeable pack and charger.

The greatest advantage of the DFX is also its' greatest distraction, that being its' adjustability. If you get one, start with the factory programs. Very slowly start adjusting settings to see how the machine reacts. Over time you will learn the machine and find you have one of the finest detectors ever made. At all costs, avoid the hot, full blown programs available on many sites until you fully understand how changes affect the machine. These "hot" programs have probably caused many new owners to become frustrated and give up on the machine. Quite frankly, the programs I use are slightly altered versions of the factory DP-SILVER and HI-PRO.

If you go the DFX route, understand that you are getting one of the finest, most adjustable detectors ever offered by any company.

All the best and HH

Thanks for the replies, yes I suppose what is turning me onto the mxt is the ease of use relative to the dfx. It may also be the knobs to turn since I am currently a Tesoro user. I am not completely decided against this dfx I am looking at, but will know one way or another by the end of the week I am sure. I am pretty confident that if the detector had turned on and worked like a charm I would have walked out the door with it. As it is with not able to get its full voltage due to a corroded battery pack, it just looks much less attractive right now. I'll give the people a chance to clean up the battery pack so I can check it out so I can make a decision. I sure wish it had another coil with it and some of the other goodies.

Look for a clean used (discontinued) IDX Pro, a simple 2 filter, slow sweep speed, quick response/recovery detector, much like your Tesoro's.... but it is a deeper seeking detector with a better meter... and you can find used coils for it on the cheap side. A 6&1/2 inch coil is recomended, either the 5.3 BullsEye, 5.3 Black Max or the older BM 600. My opinion only.

the mxt your looking for just showed up in the classifieds here on finds

That looks like a good deal on an mxt, I was really looking for the pro version since I like to hunt often at night, but beggars can't be choosers a lot of the time. I went ahead and bought the dfx but at the very least it looks like I need to find a new battery/batteries for it but I practically stole it. They let me buy it for $100 plus tax! I called Whites to ask them about service prices and to check the serial number to make sure it was not a prior stolen unit. Good news, the unit is not stolen and they told me worst case scenario, I would not be out of pocket any more than about $130 no matter what needed to be fixed on it. So, if a new battery does not solve the low battery/low voltage, overload problem then I can send it in to whites, get a repair and still be out less than $300 for the cost of the detector plus service charge. Any thoughts about the low battery problem? When I power on it only shows about 0.4 volts and the battery check after power up shows 0.0 volts.

I would let White's solve the battery problem..... it probably should be totally check out anyway and that would be money well spent.

Good advice Larry, I think I'll just pack her up and send it on in for a check out, check up and tune up.

I must be dreaming then, Widebody. Would you think I would also be dreaming if I bought a dfx for $100 plus tax?? I would probably have your same opinion, yet I did get mine for that price. Yes it needs a new battery and did not come decked out with every accessory possible, but I still got it dirt cheap. I got lucky, we sometimes get lucky. Also, value has many considerations, one of which is an items' value in the opinion of the owner/seller. I don't see why I cannot find a used mxt pro if I got lucky or if the seller did not think it worth more than $400. Just my opinion though ;)
