For your Garrett Infinium users out there, I'm getting ready to buy an Infinium and wanted to get some opinions on optional search coils and how good the stock shaft is. Looking at the Garrett 8" mono and the Garrett 5 x 10. Of the two, which one would you recommend. Are there others that I should be looking at? Also, how is the balance on the stock shaft? Is it worth getting an after market shaft? I purchased a Plugger shaft for my Excal II and really like it.
Will be using the Infinium mostly for water/beach hunting and relic hunting here in Virginia.
My little bit of use with the LS, she likes the chesapeake bay, falses at the waters edge in OC MD. Can't use it in the water there, falses real bad. I have the large mono..10x14, I want to get the 8.....my opiinion, deeper then the DF. But with both I still have a lot to learn. I've heard there is little difference in depth between the big mono and the little 8...a question you may want to ask over on the infinium forum..
I have the Infinium with the stock shaft, the 10x14 DD, the 8 in mono [I like it], and the stock headphones and haven't used it much and never at the beach yet. I don't see much problem with the stock shaft, box under the cuff, but those that know [check the Infinium forum] say get the straight shaft. I don't like the stock headphones and will get the Greyghost underwater HP soon. Most say the 10x14 mono coil is the one for the beach. Since the Inf is first a gold prospecting machine, it is sensitive to smaller bits than most beach machines, therefore will need to be tuned to the beach and they say that means running disc up to as high as 3, losing some depth, but getting the small gold jewelry. Search for Junklord's settings. It seems that using reverse disc on hi/lo responses would be killer on gold jewelry. Also, just digging lo/hi responses should be killer on coins and silver [search Steve Hershbach's article on coins with Inf]. Good luck, hope that helps a little.
You should note that the Garrett 5x10 and 3x7 Infinium coils are not submersible coils like the other Infinium coils. These are intended for land gold hunting. I have a straight shaft on mine and like the balance better than the original one. The 8" mono is easier to swing in the water for me but I have not tried it on the dry beach as I have a Safari for that and dry land.
Hi Etrec,
On the Infinium coils, the 10X14 MONO is the way to go on dry and wet sand beaches. It covers lots more area than the 8 inch Mono.
In the water, the 8 inch M0N0 is easier to swing. The 10 X 14 DD (stock) is lots heavier and a DD usually is not needed, the MONOs
handle the black sand just fine. The 3x7 and 5X10 are not waterproof to any depth and not recommended at the beach unless you
stick to dry sand only.
Also be aware the Infinium can pick up lots of interference in some areas, that isn't a ground balance problem. Ground balance can
take a bit to get used to, but then you will h ave a great beach detector. Tuned for gold and goes deep.
Good luck,
Rich
Thanks everyone for your input, it helped a lot. I decided to get the Garrett 8" and 10 x 14 Mono coils to go along with the stock 10 x 14 DD. Based on what every told me, the mono coils are the best for dry/wet sand and the 8" is a lot easier to swing in the water. I went ahead and purchased the Plugger shaft as well.
I will be getting everything this week and plan on using it along with my Minelab E-Trac at a civil war hunt next weekend here in Virginia. I believe the place we're hunting has that nasty red Virginia clay and it will be interesting to see how the Infinium performs.
