Opinions on DX-1 probe please

Well-known member
I'm thinking of getting a DX-1 probe for my M6 I was just looking for opinions on how well it works and does it add much weight to the setup. Thanks!

Should have a weight spec on the site.. Have you tried the Whites TRX?

I believe they add about a pound of weight to the unit when mounted . I had one on my M6 a long time ago but didn't like it because the cables were always in my way when trying to dig a target had to watch that I didn't cut the DX-1 cable . Also on the M6 you have to hold the pinpoint switch with one hand while using the dx-1 in the other to pinpoint was a lot harder than just using a good handheld pinpointer that didn't require interaction with your detector to work . They are good pinpointers and go deep if you like them but was to inconvenient for me . I'm not sure but seems to me that someone said they don't make new ones anymore, so not sure if you can get them repaired anymore or not if you have a problem .

Good Luck ,
Harold

I own a DX-1 that i bought years ago for my DFX,in theory its a very good bit of kit and it does work reasonably well, but i did notice that it was getting used less and less as i found it easier and quicker to just use my Garrett probe,it may only weigh about a 1 pound but at the end of a full days session it can take its toll fatigue wise.Mine has sat in the loft for a few years not being used the other down side is that it cannot be transfered to other machines apart from the ones that it was designed for.

similar to Mega B's and I am sure a few others.

Do they work? Yes, usually pretty well.

Are they heavy? It doesn't feel like it, but the answer is Yes. The earlier versions weighed a little more but the last DX1 offerings weigh about 5 oz. for the switch box and 5 oz. for the cable and pinpointer (from SunRays website), and that only makes 10 oz. overall. Just ⅝ lb., but after a while, especially if you're not younger and healthier, you can definitely notice the weight addition.

I like the DX1, but where I hunt the extra dangling cable would get snagged on sage brush and other things, so due to the off-balanced set-up and the annoying snags, I decided I could live without it. That's especially true since hand-held pinpointers improved in depth and performance. I went to the Garrett Pro-Pointer when it first came out and it worked okay, but I sold it when I knew the White's TRX was near release.

That was one of the best moves I made because while I do not always use a pinpointer, when I feel compelled to it's because I need one that is more sensitive and provides me the best depth ... that definitely is the reward of owning and using the Bullseye TRX. Impressive, and it will match or better the depth I got with the least two in-line SunRay pinpointers I compared it with.

You have a very good detector in the M6 so I would suggest complementing it with a TRX pinpointer.

thanks for the advice, I never took into consideration any of the points you have all brought up. I do a lot of woodland cellar hole hunting so the cord issue would be an aggravation. I will stick to a handheld. I have a pro pointer but I find that it makes the M6 go crazy when on. I have to either shut off sound on headphones or set my machine far away from hole. Not that big of a deal, but if your in a site with many targets it gets really annoying after awhile. I will definitely invest in TRX if the interference is not an issue. Thanks again for the feedback guys, it saved me 189.00!!!!!

Something else to look into if wires are a problem would be wireless headphones. There are only a few that work well without delay and the good ones are expensive. I did manage to make a DIY setup but it can be finicky at times.. However, no cored is worth a little tweaking now and then!

Just thought of one other thing,i found that sometimes after i had switched the probe on and used it i then forgot sometimes to flick the switch back again to coil mode and then wondering why i was not hearing any signals. Its not a common mistake but it has certainly happened to me on more than one occasion :)

Well guys I just bought a TRX and already sold my Pro-Pointer that I posted on Classifieds, Boy this Forum sure is a valuable tool for everything Metal detecting! Thanks Finds Treasure Forum and its Members!!!

Make sure your read the TRX manual, it is a little more than the ProPointer. Also visits Whites Forum and check out the TRX forum, there are adjustments that you don't really need to change but can be that are note documented in the manual. Those are in the whites forum as well as other places on the internet.
One thing I do not remember being in the manual was when the battery is low the light will flash when in use to tell you it is time to change the batteries. And yes, the light is only bright enough to tell you it is one, if you look at it.. one of the few cons.. battery life and water tightness and shell replaceability are my guess as to the reason for this compromise.

I use both the TRX and the Garretts Propointer in tandem. The ProPointer is so much faster at locating the target once it's within 2 inches...it's worth it to carry 2 pinpointers. I hoped the TRX would solve the situation of having to carry two pointers on hunts. If it was me, I woulda kept that GPP. The TRX is lacking without the side detection. Lacking side detection is a real "slow-down" IMO.

As far as the DX though...I tried one of those types back in 2010, as a new buddy of mine did. Both of us now have the DX pointers in the closet. Oh well.

The M6 with any handheld pointer is a cool setup. Just set the coil a distance away when in the hole digging. Easy resolution to any interference.

I have 2 Sunrays but I have been using my Garrett pin pointer more often. The Sunrays look cool on the detector but I just think the Garrett finds coins deeper. Now that the TRX is mentioned I may buy one

I'm sure I'm echoing other responses in some respects but I love it. I have one on my DFX and one on my V3i. I will say they are not as sensitive as the Garret or Whites latest and greatest. But my machines get me close enough that I pin point quite quickly with it. I won't lay it down and leave it some where, and it runs off my detectors batteries. Yes it adds to the weight my arm carries but the trade off is worth it. Some detectors are a little heavy already, my V3i weighs more than my DFX, but I'm a burly guy so it's no big deal.
It also gives you the vdi numbers and analysis like your coil does, but it's like a 1" coil in the hole. To me this isn't that important since I have a pretty good Idea what I'm digging up already. But none the less more info in my analysis arsenal to make a more informed decision about my targets. Pretty ingenious if you ask me.
I said all that to say, yes I'd buy another DX-1, and I probably will when I wear these out. The hand held units are not as friendly to wear and weather! But i'm hard on my equipment and I put a lot of hours in.

I have one on my MXT and I like it, a lot. I can't speak for the TRX as I haven't used it, but I find the DX- 1 to be deeper than my GPP and any other handhelds I have used. Not familiar with the statement about having to use the pinpoint switch on the M6, but you do not have to do that on the MXT and the DX-1 responds just as the coil does to sensitivity settings and the disc. set.
