Opinions needed - wich underwater detector ?

[attachment 28558 cleanedgold.JPG]I've been thinking about an underwater detector.Lake Erie has many old beaches and I want to snorkle or dive the shallows.I own a Minelab explorer II, and detect every weekend.I am considering the minelab excaliber but your input would be helpful.Shallow waters in Ohio are being overlooked and all that gold sitting out there is making me crazy|.I posted a few of my land finds and can't wait to be able to post some water finds!

I use an Excal and I like it a lot, and think you'd adapt to it fast since you've used an Exp II. They're not exactly the same tones, but similar. The Excal "sticks" on a certain tone level and stays there until it encounters another target. After a period of time using it, you can ID many targets just from sound and shape alone.
I've also owned or used a CZ-20, Beach Hunter ID, PI Pro, and a Headhunter Diver. They all have their strong points, but I still prefer the Excal around water. If I'm in an area where the iron targets aren't going to greatly outnumber the good targets, the simplicity, balance and depth of the PI Pro is hard to beat.
Since you're hunting fresh water, you have Tesoro's Tiger Shark and Sand Shark to consider as well. Good luck.

You want to get something that discriminates if you are hunting fresh water only. If you are ever going to hunt salt water beaches, then you will need something that can do that. For fresh water, you can use the HeadHunter Diver, Tesoro Tigershark, or Minelab Excaliber. All of the PI detectors will work too. You just wont be able to discriminate with the PI's. Hope this helps!! Happy Hunting!!

How much iron is in the lake? If it's like the 1 I hunt, it's TRASHY! a PI will make life miserable there. Have personally used Excal and Huntress has used Head Hunter Diver (borrowed) with success in fresh water. She now owns a wader and we are planning a lake hunt for monday. Watch for our post. I also use the Excal in trashy surf areas and I currently use a Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II (borrowed from my wife) for clean surf areas. Intend to purchase Aquasearch soon for clean surf areas.

In freah water, i personally use a Tigershark. It can sniff smal gold like not mutch other detectors. I was using my sovereign X2 in a water thight box and taught i was well armed. Untill one day i eyeballed a small gold cross. The trusty old sovereign (which has the same electronics that the excalibur) couldn't see it !. Called my friend who was using the tiger shark and he could ear it. That made me buy a tesoro too. In fact, in here (Quebec) most lake hunter have a tigershark in their arsenal.

But if you hunt in old and trashy areas, the excalibur will help you sort thru trashy area a little better. The tiger can descriminate some iron crap, but you can expect to dig a lot of aluminium foil and bottle caps.

You got to decide what you want to do. Dig everything or almost and find the hidden gold with the tiger shark, or selectively hunt trashy areas and maybe leave some smaller gold behind.

So finally, it all depends on the kind of detecting you prefer and what beaches you detect... there is also a detectorpro vlf unit... my buddy just got one, but we didn't had mutch chance to try it yet. I like the lightness of the unit !

After you cleaned completely a beach, then it might be worth trying a PI unit. Especially if you have moving sand and deeper targets. The PI are very powerfull and deep. But they barely make the difference between a bobby pin and a 20 dollar gold coin !

Hope that helps !

The one lake site I have managed to hunt(with a strong west wind blowing the water out of a shallow bay)is loaded with iron.I can hunt that area in NOV.when the lake is at it's lowwest level. My intended target is gold rings,I realize it's not always going to go as planned but I'm looking to get the detector that will do the best job.I can snorkle and plan on 6' to 8' depths max.
all the posts are very helpful!
thanks everyone. John

Based on the conditions you have described, the Excal will work excellent. If you decide to go to the surf you can run it there too. You will not be disappointed. Would not recommend that you belt mount it though as the wiring is fragile and can be pulled unless precausions area taken. Max And Tim are pretty savvy at belt mounting their units. Good luck in your decision.

I've only had mine a little over a month but I would say that based on my research Excl 1000 is the way to go. Covers lots of ground, discriminates well and has good penetration.
For $1k it's a great all around machine, especially if you outfit it with the straight shaft.
