Opinions needed on X-terra 70

I am an explorer II user that is interested in the X-70. I am very new to the X series and I just wanted to get some feedback from all of those that are using it...can it offer me anything that my explorer cannot?

It's lighter than the Explorer but it can't compete with the Explorer. I have both detectors and like them both. Sometimes I like to use the Xterra 70 to give my arm a break and my favorite coil for the XT70 is the 5 x 10 DD.

Having NEVER even used an Explorer of any kind. I do not feel I am qualified to answer this question. But, and this is a big but, having owned and used the X-terra 70 for about 8 months now I can address this detector. I really love this detector! I am 58 now and not as in shape as I once was and the X70 is light enough for me to be able to swing all day. I find that 'depth' has so much to do with where and when one is hunting and the ground mineralization and many other variables as well, it would be my guess that the Explorer would be just slightly deeper than the X-70. It is possible that the Explorer may be just a little better on tid than the X-70. Now give this a little thought. The X-70 can be swung faster and is much lighter than the Explorer and there is where the real difference between these two detectors really is. Lets put this in perspectine. My personal opinion is that if I can cover more property and cover it for a longer period of time without wearing myself out I think I can find almost as much with the X-70 and feel good doing it. So the X-70 is for me! I have found pennies and dimes to depths of 9" in some very nasty parks. I mostly hunt for coins and hope for jewelry and the detector has never had any malfunctions. Yes, I do dig some unwanted targets and yes it sometimes doesnt stay solid on deeper objects but I have found more silver with this detector than any other I have owned over the past 28 years. I do very little beach hunting or relic hunting, but the X-70 should be good here as well. The batteries seem to last forever in the X-70 and that is also a big plus for me. I am not trying to say that either detector is better over the other, just that one MUST take all consideration and then determine which detector is better for him, or her rather than which detector is the best detector. If you take the world's best detector for an all day hunt but can only take it's weight for 1/2 day, then you do not have the best detector for you. Just my 2c worth. I'll stay with the X-terra 70. At least for a while!!!!

If you get run off the forum, James, then I guess I'll get run off, too. The X70 is my first Minelab, and though it's not considered "top of the line", I've found no reason at this time to upgrade.

I'm 61 and agree with you on the weight issue. It's my fourth detector and may be my last. It does what I need it to do; what else could I ask for:thumbup:

Great review; thanks:clapping:

For example, I've not heard of many people prospecting w/ an EXP which the X-70 will do. On a saltwater beach I'd use the EXP in the damp/wet sand, and the X70 up in the dry w/ an HF coil simply because it will likely find smaller gold.

The bottom line I think is that each has it's distinct strengths which though they may overlap some ways, there may be an area you are looking for an edge in.

Thank you all for your input and opinions. This new technology is a bit confusing though. Does one coil operate differently than the next and is there one that can be used as an " all purpose" type. I am to assume that the higher the khz the deeper it will go?

all around coil for the X-Terra. The higher frequency coil may not be as deep seeking, but is more sensitive to finding small gold items. The lower frequency coil could possibly be just a tab deeper seeking than the standard 7.5 kHZ coil and is a good relic hunting coil. Kelley (Texas) :)

Another plus for the Exterra is that the screen can be read. I'm 72 with a bad back and can't use the Explorer anymore. The Explorer does find coins deeper in my soil.

Mine (X-Terra 50) wont be here till Monday. But should be a great second detector with the explorer. Basically being what the explorer isn't Lite, fast, good on small gold.
