Opinion on inner city vacant lots

While returning home the other day from the VA hospital in St. Louis I was amazed on how many vacant lots there were in downtown STL. Next to these lots were 2 story housed all brick or business all had to be built 70-80 years ago. Not the safest place to hunt, but I'd try it during day time. Its got to have something and never been hunted. I'M sure tempted. Has anyone ever MD in the inner city?? There must be thousands of the lots all over the city, I saw about 20 or 30 in a 2 mile section of Grand Blvd.

They can be very good Jeff, but in your city and mine I wouldn't do it unless I was with several other people...and even then, I would have to give it some very serious thought. A few silvers just aren't worth taking the chance IMHO. HH jim tn

If they've been vacants lots for a long time, and are in a blighted part of town like you say, then chances are, they're going to be a waste-land of junk (wino caps, cans, foil, hubcaps, zinc, etc....). But if they're freshly demo'd old buildings, then there won't have been as much time to introduce modern junk.

In my small city, there's a few-block square area that was a China-town district at the turn of the century. It has vacant lots where buildings had burned or been torn down back in the 1950s and '60s. There is no way you could detect them now, as they are homeless encampments, etc... To get under the junk, we have even gone and flat shoveled out areas near the sidewalks (where the old wooden sidewalk and porches used to be). We shovel down about 6" (to the point where we stop seeing modern plastic and broken glass, etc...) in an area about the size of a kitchen table. Then stop, detect, and repeat. We've been rewarded with cache coins, barbers, early mercs, tokens, etc... doing this.

I'm thinking "Gang-Bait" There are places in big towns you just don't go, especially with a MD. You'll be invading turf, displaying unclean devices, unbecoming to their idea of Macho, and for little rewards. Vacant lots in the ghetto is where "locals" dump their garbage cans and throw trash (thangs that don't work no mo. If you do go, be sure to take 4 or 5 of the biggest MO FO's you can find, equipped with base ball bats, and expect to loose your detector and get a little blood on ya! Where I go, I arm myself and be prepared to do full battle with Mtn Lions and Black Bears. But, I consider the forest a place of LOW risk compared with you have in mind. HEY GOOD LUCK. :stretcher:

The kids ( Gangs) what ever you want to call them shoot just for the fun of it...............
