Last Sunday I spent the afternoon at the Civil War Campsite that I first found two weeks ago. Myself and my partners have logged about 30 manhours at this site. There is a big 30 acre field that has sporadic targets in it and an area of about an acre that is packed with iron. We beat it real hard, got 4 buttons, 3 coins, and many rivets, balls, a few minies, etc.
It finally got to the point that I couldn't get any more high tones. I've had my Explorer since January and had been hunting this site with iron mask at -15, and ferrous sounds as upstate Jim has advised many times on this forum. I also use sensitivity at 28 most of the time and the digital readout.
Anyway, at the end of the day, I noticed I was nulling out over a room sized area packed with iron. Even by turning the sensitivity way down to 8 or 10, I could not keep from nulling. So I decided to try iron mask at -16 and crank the sensitivity back up to 28. I didn't think it would make much difference, but it was like opening a door. The nulling stopped and there must have been 10 times the signals that I got at -15. The noise is almost overwhelming and or course most of it was iron, but the good news was that I could hear the high tones over the low ferrous tones. In about 30 minutes I got several medium to high tone targets (8 to 26 digital) in the area that I had just gone over with iron mask -15 and couldn't get a sound.
They all turned out to be rivets, hardware, or lead, but it was pretty exciting to me and I plan to hit it again this weekend. If you have a similar situation, I recommend you try the -16. You may be surprised. Ed
