Soooooo funny Seriously though,I'm glad to hear about your success finding deep ones It helps me keep the faith.I think I'm going to ask santa for a plain ticket to come visit you so I can finaly hear one. Amazing that all the good advice and help I've gotten here and elsewhere cant seem to cure my problem. My current theory is that If I dig everything I can ruffly locate deeper than 6 inches (1/4 from the bottom of the depth meter)I'll eventually find a coin over 7 inches deep. I've found that we do still have nails that deep here in wisconsin, Ibuprofen does reduce the swelling in your hands, and prozack can help me resist the temptation to start swinging the detector perpendicular to the ground as opposed to parallel

Todd, if they coins are not 7 to 8 inches in the ground, can the detector hear them?
That is the same type of question as: If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it, did it fall?
Why don't you bury some coins at 7 to 8 inches and wait for the Spring to come and the ground will be settled around them. Then you can see/hear if your detector can pick them up.
When you bury them make sure all iron is not nearby.
This sure is cheaper than a plane ticket.
If your detector will hear them at 7 to 8 inches in your ground that you bury but you don't hear any at a park or neighbors house etc. then it is a pretty safe bet that they just are not there.

I have several targets burried in my yard ranging from 4 to 12 inches deep. they have been there since the spring. Starting with the one at 8" deep the signal becomes very broken up inconsistant and definately unrecognizable. I can pinpoint a square nail much better than anyone of these coins (thats how crappy the signal I'm getting is).
Granted, there is a fair amount of iron in my yard. so I've tried burrying them at beaches, in very quiet feilds and now a days, every site I go to I bury one at least 9 inches deep and try to find something recognizable about it. It consistantly sounds like a very bad iron signal that you only get about once every five swings. The only way I can get a recognizable signal from a coin beond seven inches is in an air test. In an air test I can get a great signal past 1 foot away.
So Tony, there are definately deep targets out there, but I am curently either not using the right machine, or I'm not using the machine right!
Thanks again for trying.

Todd, one problem I see is where you say you bury coins at this place and that place etc. and try to hit it with the detector.
Around here and most places in the U.S.A. it takes about a year for the soil to really get settled again around a coin for the detector to really pick up on it. Otherwise it is like air testing.
Burrying a coin at the beach is a different matter. For some reason the sand quickly resettles and so it is not like air testing.
So even if you burried the coins in the spring I would still wait until this coming Spring to test them again.
Most old coins as you know have been in the ground for over a hundred years.
But still you can sort of tell what a coin is going to sound like and look like on the meter the way it bounces by air testing the coin to the limits of the machine. It will sort of look and sound like that in the ground too.

Thanks Tony, I'll try air testing one at its limits next time. I've done this many, many times but I'll do it some more and see If I can catch something I missed.

I don't know if you have tried to really pack the dirt back down hard after you plant your targets or not but that will make an immediate difference in whether or not the Explorer will see it and sound off. Known fact that the Explorer does not like disturbed ground at all.
You can dig a coin at 6" or so and simply drop it back in the hole and cover it up with dirt and not hear it most of the time .. however, if you pack that dirt back down the Explorer will hit it again.
H.H.

Hey Todd. Here is what I did. I buried a coin at 8 inches. Put the gain at 7. Adjust the sensitivity until you can get a good repeatable tone. Go out detecting with those settings and find coins.

Yep, they will sound iffy that deep in Wisconsin soil. I'm suprised you can hit them that deep at all, that sounds real good to me.
Only suggestions: High sens in Manual means depth, you never know were auto is running at. I can seldom run above upper twenties in rural areas. Bigger coil can help. Get rid of all discrimination; then you should hear the signal more than one in five sweeps.
Otherwise sell the explorer and try something else. I'm pretty sure you'll eventually come back. And again, I think you are wasting your time worrying about the deep ones.
Chris

Go back to your settings:
SENS-28 Manual or as high as possible without falsing
FAST-on
DEEP-on
Gain - 7/8
THRESHOLD-barely audible or one step louder
IRON MASK -10 to -16
SOUNDS-conduct
accept coins, accept jewelry
Always start out by doing "NOISE CANCEL".
8" should be no problem at these settings.
I've dug 12" LC and quarters (rang very clear)
Dime sized half-reales @ 10"
Many dimes/qtrs/IH's @ 8"
this is with standard 10" stock coil.
Headphones (padded)
Make sure Iron mask is "ON" !!!!
Good luck!
