With temps more like June than November, Bill and I were able to get out the site where we pulled the SL dimes this past week. I decided that, with the abundance of iron trash and the lack of gold targets, I would see if the 3 kHz concentric coil on my X-Terra 70 was better suited for the task. Theory is that the higher frequency coils are better for low conductive targets. And, lower frequency coil are better for higher conductive targets. So, with GB readings being in the 50's using the 7.5 kHz coil on prior hunts, and lots of iron in the ground, I figured the 3 kHz would not only help me find some more silver before winter. But might also help stabilize the X-70. I don't know if those thoughts hold any water or not. But I did find the GB levels to be in the low 40's and the iron targets did not seem to splash as many false high-tones. I will also add that I was able to hunt in the 99 tone mode for a little while and for the first time, it didn't drive me nuts. Additional settings were Auto NC to -1, GB-44, Volume-full, Sensitivity-full, slight threshold and All Metal mode. In the extremely trashy areas (where the old buildings were burned down) I would switch to a pattern with iron rejected. Once I got to an area that only had two or three responses per sweep, I would switch back to all-metal.

Although we spent another 5 hours at the site, I only found one more SL dime. A little better shape than the other 3 I found. But not as old. This is a 40 acre patch and finding any coins is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I hate to admit it. But those coins we did happen to wander across this past week were probably found due to luck, more than skill. But, either way. I'll take them!! HH Randy

Randy if you put in 5 hours that's not luck, it's working at it the way you sometimes have to. Glad to see someone posting on use of the 3kHz coil as I have very short time on mine. Very nice find despite the time factor.
