Went in town yesterday to do a little detecting and saw an "old Timer," with what I call a "suitcase on a stick." This is what I call the old White's of about 35 years vintage. Anyhow I stopped and we talked and he said to join him. I felt bad that I would really clean the area out with my MXT but joined him. The area was really metal trashy and I felt so sorry for him cause I saw him bending down so much and doing a lot of digging! As for me I just passed over all that trash. In about thirty minutes I gave up cause my coil was just to big for all the trash targets. We compared finds and I found about six pennies. He pulled out about 70 coins of all kinds. He said its all in the skill of tone identification. He said he bought his new about 35 years ago and would'nt trade it in for nuthin! GO FIGURE!!!!

I had a similar experience with a guy using an eagle spectrum, I used my MXT. Of course , his is multi tone, ours in relic mode is ferrous/nonferrous. Trashy site, i had my 5" excel coil on, never used it before. He hunted everyday, I mean everyday, what little time we hunted, he found more than I did. It wasn't fun @ the time. He went behind me and found coins. HH

The solution is obvious. I need to find a WWII surplus vaccum tube mine detector and study those deep down audio tones and forget all this new state of the art technology!

Hi Ron. I know this is an MXT forum but I have to add my two cents. I own an XLT and here's what happened to me. I usually dig the dry sand on the beach. A couple of times I stood till after dark. I couldn't see my VDI Number or get a Depth reading on the object. After awhile going by the sound only not only did I find coins like crazy but I found the only two gold rings this summer both at 10:30 P.M.
So the moral of the story is to study what your detector is telling you. I'm still learning but I use the sound more now.
HH Mike
