Onward through the fog...Davy Jones unlocked...

Gulf Hunter

Active member
Well Gulf Huntress and I went for a spin this am. We got to the island and could not decide which end to hunt. Usually rely on her intuition to guide me somewhat on where to hunt. We finally decided on the spot and hunted there for the better part of the morning. I only had .16 and she didn't do much better and gave up on the surf hunting and retired to the beach with the Ace 250 for some coin shooting. We left that spot after noon and went elsewhere to the spot where I found my silver eagles. It was still foggy, but I could see my landmark enough to gauge that I was close to being in the right spot, but no silver eagles today. Either I got them all or the rest are under 2 feet of sand. A little more clad was showing and got a .925 hoop. Then a ferrous hoop. AND THEN THIS HOG SHOWS UP! A 10k religious medallion of the finest order. With a pic of my savior on it. I love it! Took a pic of the fore and aft for you're viewing enjoyment. Sorry Max, chunked the nut.

Well, I took her to Whataburger and we did a little feedin' there. Can't believe their pilin' sand on our beach. Now we're really gonna be sanded in. The jury is still out on the medallion. It distinctly says 10k, but the gold on His chin and nose are wearing through to what looks like silver or I hope white gold. Went to my jeweler today for a second opinion and he was closed. Will return again tomorrow. It may be worth paying for a test on this 1.

The one I found is the size of a US quarter. The very next day I took it to a pawnshop and had it acid tested and it turned out to be gold plated. I was told that a lot of gold plated religious items are manufactured in Mexico and sold as solid 10, 14 & 18K. The last one I found is solid gold but they used glue to attach the embossed features.

Glad to see Davey Jones giving up some good stuff again..even if its a few small meager items. Bet your glad to get those. Havent made it to the lake to test run my Mark II yet..hopefully this Friday or Saturday. How far out in the surf did you find the medallion ?

Terry, I don't know what to think about this 1. Took it to my jeweler and he's about as much help as a cow patty. Took it home and Huntress did some acid tests. Scraped the edge and it held with 10k acid. Scraped the chin (which looks silver) and 10k ate it quickly. Did another spot with the chin and silver test acid and it held. I guess that I have 10k plating or 10k shell with silver fill on the embossed areas of the medallion similar to you're 1st.
