Only now do I realize how pampered I've become (long)

I got my Excaliber late Friday afternoon and charged the battery overnight. Yesterday morning I tried it out for the first time on some coins I had put down in the yard. I think "Man, there is not much difference in the sounds from one item to another!".

It is then I reaize that I have been spoilt by the widely varying sounds of the Explorer and DFX.

I'm telling myself it really isn't going to matter that much with this machine since I plan to pretty much dig everything anyway. Then I went hunting with it to an old homesite. I was right. I dug everything. :stars:

However, I did manage to find a old Jefferson nickel and 191? wheat. I was impressed with that since I (and others) have been over that area several times with several different detectors, including with the SE. The last two times before yesterday I came home with absolutely nothing. So I see the potential the Excal has, particularly when I learn how to get the most out of it.

I did dig some iron. I kept forgetting to pay attention to the null. I will have to train my ears to pick up the tones this machine makes and learn to tell the difference in only small differences.

Since my purchase of the Excal was on hold until my other detectors sold, I had not bought a scoop and other water related items. So last night I ordered those things following pretty much the recommendations that many of you gave me on an earlier thread. That was another $300+, but I think I'm about finished spending now. Finally, a check is on the way for Clive's book.

Now if I can just get out to the coast anytime soon.

Variability on the EXP??? Is that what spreads the sounds out??

On a BBS, it takes a while to tune in your ears. Once you get used to sound "patterns" combined with a feel for target strength and width, and small differences in tone pitch in both target audio and threshold ..... you will have it down pretty good.

It will become instinctive after a while as you get used to how BBS pronounces it's "words".

... and was also hoping that I just need to learn the BBS words.

Yes, spreading out the sounds is what I meant. It is ver easy to tell the difference between a penny and a dime for instance.

So far the BBS sounds sound pretty much the same to me except the ones that last longer like a big target. Now when I've got two targets testing them side by side I can tell a slight difference. But when I was in the feild I couldn't remember what the sounds were.

I find it nearly impossible to tell the difference between a zinc and the other clads by the target audio, but the lingering threshold tone is different. When you sweep the coil far enough off the target that the target is lost and the threshold only remains, then you can hear the difference.

This also helps on odd shaped or multiple targets of different conductivity, as the remaining tone will be different between right and left sweeps.

Good reason to forget that there is a silent search switch.
