One Thin Dime, One Sharp Indian

Went out last night to one of our spots, and although I was feeling ill, Mike and I managed a few oldies! It was very slow-going and painful for me, but I could either be sitting at home feeling miserable or I could be out digging coins (at a much slower pace than usual) in fresh air....hmmm

First coin I dug looked at first like a flat button - there was no relief nor designs on it that I could see - but this target later turned out to be an 187x Seated dime! This is by far the thinnest dime I've ever dug, not to mention the oldest...it's too bad there's not enough detail left - but last week's superb Barber dime kinda makes up for it

We hunted for about 3 hours after finding the Seated, with nothing but trash for our efforts. Mike eventually cornered a fantastic Shield nickel, and I would go on to get a faint squeaker of a target in a mess of roots that would turn out to be a very sharp 1905 Indian cent. Had to again pull out the root saw, and it was physically painful for me to cut the roots (which doesn't happen hardly at all for me), and this was my cue to wrap it up for the night...

Still not 100% over this...crud, but it will take much more than a headcold to keep a detector out of my hands!

May I ask what machine Mike uses? I've heard the Deus may not be the best machine for locking on low conductive coins like nickels especially deep.

Great IH!
Never saw a dime that thin...there's not even any reeded edge left...it looks like a really thin button.

CZ was moving slowly...he wasn't up to his usual speed.
The typical furious blur of his digger had slowed to slightly less that cartoon movement, but for a short/slow hunt, we both did pretty well.

I was using an unfamiliar detector, and didn't particularly like the tones...or grip...or balance.
Still ended up with couple of good digs.

There was a Trolley car token spill of two 'Full Fare' tokens in really good shape.
Then, just as I was bad-mouthing the detector I was using, it gave me an 8-1/2" Shield Nickel!
(Turned out to be an 1867, and not completely worn out.)

The first Shield from this particular section of that park.

We ended early, as Taylor was about to collapse.
Probably a good idea too, as he just had enough left for the hike out to the cars.

A great time, as always,
:)

You certainly may. :)

More often than not, I hunt with a CTX as the companion to CZ's Deus...kind of like those guys on Detectorists. :)
It's a good combination. Other times it might be a Coinstrike, Tejon, Golden Mask, or one of a few others...depends on the mood and park/area we're going.

Last night I was testing/using a Makro CF-77 with a 9" coil.
It's near 18k and likes the small/low conductors...but also loves the small aluminum trash like bic lighter wheels.
It also tricked me way too many times on really deep/faint/rusty/sharp iron nails. (Which to be fair...is pretty common for any detector to do in high mineralization.)

I haven't made up my mind about it yet...
Good Luck,
HH

You guys are all over it. Congratulations on the awesome finds. I've been hitting a few old parks in Denver hoping to find some old coins but still haven't had any luck. There is so much trash that I get a hit every 6 inches or so. I purchased another detector last week and took it out with this Deus last weekend. Ended up with a bunch of newer coins and two rings which isn't bad but I really want to start hitting the older stuff. With the nasty weather heading our way I'm not sure how much detecting I'll be doing for the next week.
