One of the Nicer places I search

Hi Guys,

Sometimes you get into a nice place to search and the scenery is so good that it doesn't really matter if you find anything or not. Fortunately the place pictured below is scenic and productive, it's the First basin situated in Launceston Tasmania, maintained by our local council who in their wisdom gave me a permit to search there only if I don't dig holes, consequently I set the EX II on sensitivity 5 and only use a screwdriver to pick out the finds. If your only looking for modem coins (and I have always found money to be good) it works fine. Two three hour searches netted me $67.30 plus four rings and a badge all out of the surface grass.

All the best and happy hunting.......Boony

Wow, that's excellent. And certainly a different hunt technique...is THAT the screwdriver???

Hi Mike,

No! the item in the bottom picture is not the screwdriver I use, the one I use is a bit longer for obvious reasons, however if I find something a little bit deep to prise out with the screwdriver I use a long pair of medical forceps to pull the item out, It seems to work OK. But for every coin I find on or close to the surface there are about three or four deep hits which i would love to dig if I were allowed. I do the right thing and just take the shallow stuff so that I can continue to work the parks in and around Launceston. I have wondered how you get on in the States as a lot of people on this forum say they dig in their local parks and recreation areas.

regards Boony

Hi GraveDiggerMax,

First of all I have to leave the plug cutter at home and much to my disgust I have to ignore any signals that are 2 inches or more below the surface, make a very small hole with the screwdriver and either prise the coin or ring out with the screwdriver of grab the item with the medical forceps, then just tread on the hole and you wouldn't even know I had been there, however most of the the $2 coins are just hiding under the grass, in parts it a bit like walking on a carpet of $1 and $2 coins, I'm going to approach the schools in our area and see if they will let me use the same method in their grounds during holidays. The NO DIG policy came about by a few local do goodders that said that there were too many relics being taken out of our parks by metal detectorists, these people would rather leave to stuff in the ground to rust and corrode away rather than let someone get it out for people to see, a very strange attitude I think.

All the best.....Boony
