One of the great joys of owning a CZ

I have a buddy who was complaining about his new, fairly high dollar machine not getting any depth. He knew I had a CZ3-d with a tune up. He asked about borrowing it for a week or two. I handed it over to him yesterday and the first thing he did was air test it. He turned it on and waved a coin over it at about 13 inches and it sounded off loud and clear. He did a double take and did it again. He looked at me and his face was priceless. I am anxious to hear his stories after this week.

It's not just the depth but the simplicity too.

Was hunting yesterday on a beach in heavy wind and rain. Had my CTX3030 out first, with the 11 inch coil. Could not see the screen due to the rain, but I tone hunt mostly with it anyway. Bagged 4 silver coins in an area about 100x50 sq ft. Tried several different settings/adjustments to try to squeeze out one more silver, but my arm was starting to get a bit tired. Some areas were littered with iron nails ( some on top of the wet sand as the tide was rolling out, so the CTX was nulling every do often). In those area's you have to go slow and grid, hence the arm weariness after a while.

Went back to the truck and grabbed my straight shafted mounted CZ6a with the 8 inch coil and GG originals ( which makes this a great rain/bad weather set up where no protection is necessary...the 6a can take a major beating in all types of conditions).

I know this unit like the back of my hand, and all I need to do is it set on Salt mode, GB 5, sens 4, volume 7, disc 0 and I am off. Heck, the unit is set that way from the last salt water beach hunt so I really didn't have to do anything but turn it on !

Bagged 7 more silver dimes/quarters in that same area. Hunting In 0 discrimination, I heard all the iron, yet some silver was right next to it, and when you get that high tone repeatable hit, you know it's gonna be good.

For some reason, silver hits super hard (and deep) on this 6a with the 8 inch coil. Found lots of DEEP greenie quarters too as well as a bunch of nickels ( a few mid/high tone hits but most were high tone only which is a super feature on the CZ).

Not sure yet, but the CTX may be going up for sale.

Everytime I use my CZ's, I find good stuff. Have no clue why I have so many other units !!! HA !

Nice write up Rover....After using many units over the years am now down to a CZ6A analog and CZ7A digital and feel I can handle most conditions with the pair...
Having said the above have to agree many good units out there and to each is own.....

The CZ's are the only analog detector that I can think of that will keep up with the digital detectors of today in depth and otherwise. IMHO.

I agree therover. I had a CTX for 6 months and put about 200 hours on it and came away convinced that it did not outperform my CZ21 in saltwater. It was as deep or slightly deeper (I did find one 14k white gold ring with 20 small diamonds about 12" deep, but that was the only one ever found past 10" with the CTX) than the CZ21, but with way more flaws and features that were not needed for an underwater machine. The battery seal always made me nervouse about submerging it for my 8 hour hunts (I snorkel detect usuallly 5-10 hours, completely submerged in ~6ft water), the drag underwater killed my arms after 6 hours and the coil did not seem like it would hold up to my rough hunting style, hitting rocks and scrubbing the sand. I babied that machine!....

The price-to-performance ratio wasn't good enough for me so I sold the CTX and picked up a second CZ21 with the 10.5" coil and a custom PI...haven't missed it since. The CZ20/21 is such a workhorse and consistently performs. It's bomb-proof, rugged and if/when it does need service due to my rough hunting style...Felix usually has it up and running within a month (and it doesn't cost a small fortune for service either).

I've been very happy with my CZs and I hope Fisher refines the ol'salty sea dog and come out with a newer waterproof CZ...Dave J, please oh please update the CZ line!!!

I'm not familiar with Fisher detectors but am intrigued with the praise of the cz3d. When you say it has been tuned, is that something you must have done to get best performance and if so, does the company do this. Sorry for my ignorance but really interested in this detector, as I love to relic hunt. Thanks.

Tom Dankowski, a former Fisher engineer, tunes the CZs and is very knowledgeable on all things detecting. He has his own website and forum, just Google it to find out more.

After much concideration I believe a CZ-21 will be my next unit. :)

I love the story! I know exactly what you mean about the CZ-5 and 6 in years past. One time I didn't detect for 3-4 years and then decided to pull it out and get started again - one of the 9V batts leaked and corroded one of the terminals inside the box but not too bad overall - nothing a little TLC wouldn't fix...anyway got out into the yard of the house I was living in at the time and within 2 or 3 targets started finding Wheats and silver dimes - and I don't remember adjusting anything since the last hunt! It WAS indeed a fantastic unit for trashy areas - partly because of the 5 and 15 kHz frequencies used (just a guess though)

Pencil eraser holders - For me those stupid things would bounce between foil and nickel almost every time, but I couldn't resist digging those signals for some reason...but the reward was an occasional gold trinket or earring.

Been thinking of getting my brother in law a CZ-5 for his birthday (external speaker is always a plus lol)...you guys think that would be a good first detector for him? Super simple, great discrim, 4-tone audio, what isn't to like?

Yea after all these yrs you go to the cz forums and people are talking about their finds and how deep they are,go to whites and minelab forums its all about programs and give the machine at least 2 yrs to learn,really..Buy a fisher and go dig deep silver and gold,period..:fisher:
