One more addition to the basement project

I bought a 1912 Columbia Grafonolas made by the American Graphophone Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She plays pretty nice, gets about 5 to 6 records per windup. It's much louder than I would have expected, I have to turn the volume down all the way. I still want to get a period tiffany style floor lamp, an electric fan with brass blades, and a coffee grinder. After that it will just be a bunch of knick-knacks to fill in the blank spaces.

i assume one has to use a modern needle? Or are there some originals available?
What a find, cost you another few years before retirement huh?

had one of those record players out in the big barn. They did not have any records for it, but we would wind it up and work the flaps. I don't know what they ever did with it or what became of it. I had forgotten all about it until I saw your pictures. Thanks for posting this story. Kelley (Texas) :)

I'll probably pick more in the future as I run across them.

I figure that I won't be able to afford electricity so ..... ;)

One of the records that I have is "That Doggie In The Window" and when Arfie barks, Duke would wander over as if he was expectiung to see another dog in the basement.

Bridgeport is about 1:15 minutes south of me right on the coastline. That piece is in beautiful condition. We have a bunch of albums on 78's around here. Really heavy. I brought them down out of my wifes parents attic.

I worked there on a rescue at the L'Ambiance_Plaza collapse. Lost a lot of friends there. It was the first lift slap project in the state, and the last.

As soon as you pick one up it's amazing how much thicker, and heavier they are than an LP album. But given the fact that the record player uses a steel needle that is little more than a short nail, it's no wonder they have to be made so ruggedly. Plus it's odd that they are the same size as a modern LP album, they only have one song per side.

working on my driveway, I will take a picture of the ones here....Jane said they were her grand parents records. I know they are some brittle and heavy.... I was thinking skeet practice. Also wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday tomorrow. The more you get the better.... I never thought that way until recently....

Those records go for about $10 each on eBay. If it's a rare, or highly collectible record it can go for a lot more.

they are. However, I will look for them and if I come up with any, I'll let you know. Your basement will really take you back to some of the good ole days, that's for sure! :):

A fine addition that Ya have there.

How it has managed to look like a museum piece after all these years is amazing!

Stirs up a few memories for me,

CJ
