One month with the MMK

I purchased a MMK. Now after a month using it with over 100 hours I am not sure I made the right decision. When I use 3 tone and keep the gain under 90 it is quiet but not very deep but when I go above 90 it is deeper but the noise is awful. Squeaks, pops, clicks, chirps, high tones, low tones all mixed together UGH! Very distracting to listen to and constantly going back to check the high squeaks. 4 tones is even worse. I have tried changing frequency, fe volume at 0. Deep mode is a bust because I get a high tone on surface targets and low tone on deep targets. I thought it would give me tones that would match the targets ( high tone for coins, low tone for tabs, nickels etc.). So using deep mode I have to constantly look at the numbers as sounds don't do anything except sound like VCO pinpointing.

I want to like this machine but so far either I am doing something wrong or something is wrong with the machine. I am very frustrated. I have an eTrac and XP deus and they are a dream compared to this. Everything I have found with the MMK I could have found with any detector because it is not bringing old sites back to life. Not sure what to do?

Depth reading. When I pinpoint a penny, it reads 10 inches, but when I dig it out it is only 3 inches deep. Nothing else in the hole.

I have only had my MMK on two official hunts at this point, but can say with certainty that I have pulled coins up to 9" while keeping the gain below 90. I can also say with certainty that this machine is taking my old favorite detector to school when it comes to separation, which means I am getting targets deeper. I hate to think that your machine needs repair, but don't know what else to think. The park I hunt in is in southern California and is absolutely littered with garbage of every kind. So far it is as close to a turn on and go detector as I have ever owned. If you haven't already adjusted the tones for the mid and high conductors up, you might consider it. It has helped me separate the sounds as low and mid conductors are almost the same.

As far as depth goes, have you switched the machine from metrics to inches?

Yes, I have adjusted the tones and changed metric to inches. All the snap, crackle and pops in 3 and 4 tone are in areas with not too much trash. It's almost as if EMI is bad but I am in open fields at different spots so it can't be that. Also while pinpointing it makes a crackle tone rather than a smooth tone.

Maybe try running the isat a bit higher. I had mine set to "00" but the school I was at today I needed to run it up to "1" to settle it down. It was overly sparky set on zeros and I was having to lower the gain too far to get it quiet. When I moved the isat up I was able to run the gain where I'm used to running it.

I was having the same problem in local parks and such but not out in the homesteads and such. I found if I raised the disc up to 10 it cleared it up and was smooth sailing.etc. try raising the disc until the noises stop.

Run the disc at about 03, but remember to lower your iron audio volume or on the MMK ( Fe Volume) to about 01 or 02 so you just barely hear the iron low tone. If you have your iron audio ( Fe Vol) set high it will be noisy. I like to set my Fe Vol to where I can just barely hear it........

I hunt trashy parks and use 3 tone. I turn disc to 10. The MMk runs great for me. Trash sounds like trash. Coins sound great and hit hard. Sad, but I think you may have a defective unit.

[size=large]You may have already tried this but I thought I would mention...

1: Have you got another coil to try on it and see if it responds the same ?
2: Try re-seating the coil connector and push in firmly and tighten well.
3. I have found that if I run the Kruzer "too hot" it will "see" highly mineralized rocks.
In those situations, I turn the sensitivity back.
4: Once you have ground balanced your detector, hit the Pinpoint button and lower the coil to the ground.
If it is quite, your gb should be good. If you hear some sound, move to another place and try again.
If you still get the sound when lowering the coil to the ground, your iSAT may be too high. Lower it and try again.
Hope maybe some of this helps.. Richard Backwoods
