One less pesky screwcap on the soccer fields

Ken in NC

New member
Since I visit these soccer fields regularly, I routinely dig and remove trash, especially if it is shallow. This target ID'ed as a screwcap/zinc, at less than 3 inches, so I figured I may as well remove it. Quite a nice surprise, as it was my first Class ring, and I have been detecting since 1979. By chance, the ring is a '79 Class ring.

How many before me might have passed by this target, because it was not a coin?

Posted here because I was using a 'new' Whites QXT. This was the second target the machine found

[size=large]great find. thx for the pic. can hardly wait to find my first class or gold ring. then i'll know how you feel. :clapping: :bouncy:

I MAY have passed it by...Depends if the field is loaded with zincolns...I usually dig the first 10 signals in each zone to see what is in the area...
Isn't the QXT great??? Does yours have the 1.2 firmware???

HH,

Those pesky screwcap targets are worth the dig !

HH,

This machine does show v 1.2 on startup. I believe only the earlier Quantum II is different.

I have only used the QXT twice now, but have used many White's machines in the past. I am impressed with the stability of the machine, and the rich audio. I especially like the modulated audio, where deeper targets respond with a softer sound

I just wanted to point out that a little patience can pay off at times. I have dug perhaps 100 screw caps this year, in various locations. So while it does not happen that often, this should encourage others to stop and investigate those trash signals when they are in the mood to

Nice find Ken. If you are interested in finding the original owner, they may have posted their lost ring on http://www.classringfinder.com/

Nice find!!! Keep digging them up. I'm a firm believer for clearing the place for the next visit.......

Nice reward for a good deed Ken. Congrats.

I love detectorists that pass up targets based on TID. Just a couple of days ago I headed to the park after work. I wasn't using my whites but my other machine. I had good target that read in the 20's that would indicate a pull tab, usually. I retrieved the target and it was a 1902 V nickel. Check the hole with my pinpointer and there was something else there. Removed some soil and what do you know, a 1920 Merc.
Same thing happed a few weeks ago in a co-workers yard. She and her kids were watching and when I would get a good target they would ask, "what do you think it is". This target read as a high pull tab around 28. I cut my flap and out pops a war nickel. I thought that was wierd as it should have read around 17. Check the hole with pinpointer and out pops a merc.

Zinc signals are some of my favorites because some of the coolest stuff reads in that same area, on both of my TID machines. Also by removing those targets you can unmask another good target.

You guys just keep ingnoring those zinc signals and I will keep digging them up.

Just sold a class ring I found the other day for $182.00 Yeah there a nice find!! Class ring finder wow- that looks like a great place to look up places to hunt...lol

I won't be anymore Dan-o. Thanks for the reminder.

I did not have any luck finding the owner on the classringfinder site

This ring did not have any owner's initials inside. The particular HS has a class size of about 225 students each year, so perhaps there were 110 males in the class

It was not a gold ring, but Palladium Plus, a form of Platinum

So encourage your friends and children to have their initials engraved inside their Class rings

Way to go Ken, I will dig any target that gives me a good tone on my detector. I do look at the vid but dig no mater what it says. Dig a lot of tabs, screw tops and canslaw but have dug 11 rings this year and a nice 14K gold medalian and chain. I used to have a QXT and loved the tone. Hope it is only one of many good finds for you. Don

Very enjoyable machines to hunt with on the soccer and ballfields.

At first I thought the lack of a VDI number would be missed, however I find that the 8 zones actually help in my hunting methods. I am no longer looking for a specific number to show up, but rather thinking in terms of all the items that fall in a specific zone. Yes, I dig my fair share of tabs and canslaw, but each piece I remove from the area is still productive in my opinion.

I recently dug one of those smaller Swiss pocketknives this way. It was 3" deep and had been there for years also. Each time I dig an article like that, I realize that I am recovering something that has been passed over by others

I find the Quantum to have the most pleasant tone also. It signals hard on targets, and the pinpointer is the best I have used. I find the coin depth to be very accurate on the machine

I own both a QXT Pro and a Quantum II. The Quantum II has the 950 coil, and I find I much prefer to hunt with it over the QXT Pro. With the larger coil, I see no difference in performance. The Pro has a larger menu, but it has menu items that I did not use anyway. The II does not have noise reduction, but I always turned it off on the Pro, so I don't miss that feature. One feature of the II that I prefer is the one touch coin ID tone feature. It adds the high tone to the 4, 6, and 7 zones with one touch. On the Pro, you must select each zone seperately

At any rate, just knowing that nice items can be found in the most common places should encourage everyone

EYE Candy i got a socker filed in mind you sparked me UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mickfin

Nice find! Guess I'm fortunate (Or not!) because I just came through a stint where 3 of 3 class rings were returnable and a very nice tennis bracelet also. Kills me too.....those dang inscriptions!
