One last question about GTI 2000 to GTI 2500 Upgrade Through Garrett

Hi all,

Sorry to run this into the ground...

As I mentioned in another thread, Garrett will do a full replacement of all PC Boards, case stickers and a replacement of the search coil to essentially turn a GTI 2000 into a GTI 2500 for $350 including return shipping.

My only concern is about the display screen and button panel. I am not sure if that piece is included as part of the upgrade, but if it's not, it would seem that would be the weak link in this plan, as I've heard people talk about sticky buttons or other intermittent connectivity issues with the buttons on those machines. I'd hate to do that upgrade and then have the display go out on a 5-10 year old machine and then have to ship it back and pay God knows how much to replace.

I can't get through to Garrett on the phone for some reason this morning, to ask. Does anyone know if the display and buttons are replaced as part of this upgrade?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Heard back from Brad at Garrett. Looks like all the guts are replaced including the display and button panel. Too good a deal to pass up. I'll miss the talking lady inside my GTI 2000 though. I think she had a crush on me...

:)

My buttons have vary rarely had sticky problems. It's a mechanical thing. You just tap the button and you are "OK" The buttons are designed to prevent as much sand, moisture and dust to get into the electronics. That's probably why they can sometimes stick.

Yeah, and I'm one of those nutty people who forms attachments to inanimate objects. Every now and then I'm tempted to try and snag a Bounty Hunter TR840 on ebay just for old times sake, which was the first detector I really did well with in the 70s. There was so much silver, so much closer to the surface back then...

I just traded for a GT1 2000 that was never used and I was also quoted $350 by Garrett for the upgrade. If it's essentially the same machine does an upgrade make sense? The one thing I have discovered is that some of the after market coils don't work on the GTI 2000 which is a bummer. How long have you had yours? Are you happy with it?

I've had mine for 3 days. Got a great deal on it. I've got maybe 4 hours use on it and like all new detectors, it's going to take some time to get used to. The thing gets dimes like no other detector I've seen, but of course gets aluminum like no other detector I've seen, either. My two times out, I've gotten more dimes than pennies each time!

I'm going to do the $350 upgrade because I got a great deal on my GTI 2000. It's a complete exchange of the electronics and the coil... they even change out the stickers, so you are essentially getting a new machine.

There is another thread on the differences between the two models, but I recall people saying that the 2500 handles mineralization better and there are some other improvements I can't recall. The 2500 doesn't talk though, I don't think.
