One IH Two Wheats--- Question for Bill

eric in ks

New member
Went back to the house where I dug the SLQ last week. The house was moved to town in 1896 and doesn't have too much modern trash in it. I'm about 1/3 way thru the yard now. This is the second IH I've dug and it rang completely different than the first one. First one rang like a pulltab and this one bounced between 7 and 10 on my 1500. Bill, if you read this and could explain that to me I'd appreciate it. HH, Eric

Well Im not Bill but I have read somewhere that IH pennies tend to give differnt readings. Some are also differnt sizes I heard.

First of all IH's are made of mostly bronze so don't read like a copper, zinc, or clad cent. Also the amount of patina. corrosion, halo, or lack thereof, will alter the reading. A corroded coin will read different than a clean one. Even the new cents (1982 and up ) read different than the older cents due to change in composition.. It will take you awhile to adjust to the differences in readings and why but before you know it you'll be an old pro.

Bill
