Once upon a ring return and stardom for the Gulf Hunter.....

Gulf Hunter

Active member
This class ring was lost on "July 29, '07", according to Hunter's father, while the family was on vacation(how ironic that Gulf Hunter found Hunter's ring, don't you think?). I recovered it on Dec. 3, '07. Allow me to describe the days hunt........ It was a blustery day, with North winds howling at 20-25 knots. The tide had blown out exposing the swim area nicely. I began the hunt at 6A at the 1st location, with dismal results. $.39, copper hair barrett w/colored rhinestones and a ferrous hoop earring and moved to another location at 815A. I reentered the water at the next location at 820A and hunted till 9A, with $.26 and a Rainforest Cafe copper penny medallion. I then moved to another spot and got shut out, from 915A-920A. I then ended up at the final location and hunted there, from 930A-1115A and ended up with $.31 and the Ponca City class .925 ring.

I e-mailed the school, with a description of the ring and a member of the staff was able to determine who the student was and discovered that Hunter's father worked at the school, as well! His father e-mailed me and we made the arrangements. I DID ask for $20, to cover shipping, handling and insurance. Hunter sent out this VERY NICE letter, with a cashier's check for $40!!!!

A couple of days later, I get an e-mail from Hunter's father that was worth a TON! The ring back on Hunter's hand, VERY rewarding, indeed!

Last Monday, the local paper up there called me for a short interview, for a newspaper article. Figured there would be a little article in an obscure section, within the paper. Then on Thursday, I got a manilla envelope in the mail, with another present! I MADE THE FRONT PAGE OF THE PONCA CITY NEWS! UNBELIEVEABLE!

This ring returning thing is kinda addicting and I can see it happening with more regularity in the future, but a gold one, MMMMMaybe????
I told Hunter to "NEVER wear his ring in the water again", I'll betcha he won't either, the next pirate may just loot him, LOL! His ring has a story now, unrivaled by many others too, a pirate story!

Huntress also returned another one on Sunday after church and when she forwards the information, will write her story, as well. We had been searching for this girl for 2 years!

Way to go GH....always great to see our hobby portrayed in a good light in print. It's one thing to find the ring, but doing the research to find its owner is just as hard.

Gulf Hunter,

I'm proud of you!!! Return the gold ones if you can. They really mean a lot more to some people than the money you will recieve. Yes I really know how hard it is. I just lost my wife, my business now my house and I have a part time job. I have no idea where my life is going and I just let go of over a thousand dollars in gold. Its just money. I have 2 more months to live in the house my wife and I built with love and it was our dream home. But keeping other peoples property that I can return just isn't in my nature.

Good luck in the future. I hope it brings you the happiness that it has given me.

Sincerely,

Bob

Are you serious, you really lost all those things? Man, you are really being tested right now! I'll pray for ya bro!

Hi scubadetector man you have copped it all ,i dont want to know the details ,but all i can say is it must be all up from here eh hope it all works out for you and remember only a detectorist knows the feeling good luck terry in oz:detecting::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

MAN-O-MAN, WHAT A TEST! Read the book of Job and realize things could be worse, believe it or not! You'll also note that God gave Job back 10 fold of everything that he lost, that should give you some comfort in this trying time. Mding has certainly been a good escape from the pressures of life for me too brother. I do not drink or drug either and need some way to decompress and mding gets it done for me. God bless you in this time of loss. The bible does tell us we will have trouble, but you never really expect that things will be THAT TOUGH! OBTW, I DID PRAY FOR YOU!

Hey, This is Gulf Hunters moment of fame. I didn't mean to take anything from him.

Congrats on the news story and the bit of reward you recieved. Hope you get more where that came from!!

And thanks Gulf Hunter.

Great story and good things will come to you for that. Maybe on the next scoop there will be some gold & ice.....

You got an INCREDIBLE amount of mileage for that class ring, bud!!! Now, don't get me wrong. Treasure hunting is about treasure and I have more than my fair share that was not returned.. BUT, returning class rings and anything else that can be positively identified, well that, my friend is ANOTHER treasure all to itself and I happen to believe it's more important than what I have in my treasure chest.

That was a really nice article about you two! Our hobby can't have enough of that type of press. Thanks for being persistent in finding the owners and for being THE BEST pirates I know on the Gulf coast!!!

I'm hittin' the water next weekend to to loot all the Memorial Day drops!

Fantastic story GH, you can never replace good Karma with money.

Hunters Family has already paid it forward with the return of the wallet, that spreads good will. Thanks for sharing your story and being a Pirate with a good heart. May the Gold fill your scoop forever. HH
